WRAPPING IT UP:

The GTX G1 Gaming 8GB is a proper higher end graphics card from GIGABYTE, featuring the bells and whistles of the GP GPU. That said, performance is just proper for a factory overclocked GTX , able to throw in figures just below the GTX Founders Edition on most games tested.

This card shines the most at higher resolutions and if you have yet to experience gaming at P, then this card is a good option to start with. As for cooling, thermals, and noise, this card is properly built to withstand heavy gaming sessions based on the results we got. Overall build quality is also great. You&#;d get a card that looks and feels like it&#;ll stand the test of time.

Feature wise, you’ll get an RGB functionality &#; but we felt like implementation could be better. There are only two areas, and those are hardly pleasing locations at all for the lighting. It&#;s a good thing that you can turn them off, or have them function as a visual representation of the card&#;s status.

Now pricing is set at 22, PHP. It&#;s not that high of an SRP and we felt like it&#;s a good spot for this card&#;s caliber. If you are looking for a rock solid graphics card that could easily conform with today&#;s requirements, then this card is highly recommended for you.

The fans help dissipate the heat from two aluminum finned cooling arrays that are interwoven with two large copper composite heatpipes that make direct contact with the GPU. The design looks to be well done and the GPU cooler does use a thermal pad that makes contact with the MOSFETs to ensure the PWM components are kept at safe temperatures to ensure product longevity. Gigabyte is using a 6+2 power phase design for those that are concerned about having stable voltage output.

This application even allows you to log the data from the video card, so it is a very robust utility that comes in handy. We left the card at the default &#;Gaming&#; mode setting as that is how it comes out of the box and we figured most people will leave it like that especially if they don&#;t install this optional utility.

Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX review: a stellar performer for its price

The GTX isn&#;t at the top of Nvidia&#;s product stack. That said, it&#;s probably the most interesting card available for gamers who want high-end performance, but can&#;t afford to drop ridiculous amounts of money on an ultra-high-end GPU. Gigabyte was kind enough to send over its G1 Gaming GTX , and we&#;ve put the card through its paces.

We&#;ve already talked about the GTX &#;s architecture, but since this is our first Pascal review, let&#;s take a moment to review the core. The GTX has 1, CUDA cores, texture mapping units, and 64 ROPS (this is often written as a configuration). It uses 8GB of conventional GDDR5 clocked at 8Gbps for GB/s of memory bandwidth. It doesn&#;t pack quite the oomph of the GTX &#; it&#;s functionally limited to setting up 48 pixels per clock, for one thing, even if it technically has all 64 ROPS.

General benchmarks have already shown the GTX to be a tough customer, capable of besting Nvidia&#;s previous GTX Titan X GPU. So what does Gigabyte bring to the table with its G1 Gaming GPU? As it turns out, a fair bit.

Gigabyte&#;s G1 doesn&#;t use Nvidia&#;s reference-style blower. Instead, it offers three separate fans in an open-aired cooler. Whether you prefer a blower or an open-air cooler is partly a matter of taste and partly a matter of airflow. Because a blower exhausts hot air directly from the second PCI Express slot, they&#;re typically considered a better solution for low-airflow cases. If your case doesn&#;t run hot, there shouldn&#;t be much of a performance difference between the two.

Gigabyte has taken a page from other PC manufacturers like Razer and begun including its own LED lighting system for its GPUs. This is the first time we&#;ve seen the company&#;s customizable lighting solution in action and it&#;s easy to control or modify thanks to the included Xtreme utility (more on that in a bit).

The G1 Gaming uses 6+2 power phases rather than the 4+1 system Nvidia&#;s Founder Edition GPU&#;s field and the company claims its composite heat pipe technology improves cooling capacity by up to 29% compared with other types of heat pipe design. The heat pipes themselves are made of pure copper and run directly over the GPU, which should improve the heat sink&#;s performance under load.

Nvidia Boost and overclocking

When Nvidia designed Pascal, it made some significant changes to its GPU Boost technology &#; changes that are significant in the context of our review. Up until now, GPU Boost has been similar to its CPU counterpart: AMD and Nvidia ship a card at a guaranteed base clock with a &#;best effort&#; boost clock that the GPU will try to hold if thermals and power consumption permit.

Nvidia Boost is only present on the and , but it has a significant impact on the maximum potential clock speed of the GPU. For example, our Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX has a base clock of MHz and a boost clock of MHz when running in &#;OC Mode&#; and a MHz base clock and MHz Boost Clock in &#;Game Mode.&#;

Neither of those numbers tells the whole story on how fast the G1 Gaming can run, however. When I started trying to test the GPU&#;s overclocking performance I was surprised to note that the card overclocked quite poorly, with barely MHz of headroom. When I dug into exact clock speeds using GPU-Z, I found the card was already sustaining a MHz clock rate across multiple benchmark loops. It would spike to MHz, drop to MHz, and then level off, in multiple titles, at MHz.

Nvidia describes Nvidia boost as a function that &#;boosts the card&#;s clock speed in real-time based on the target temperature. If the card is running below the set target temperature, GPU Boost will increase the clock speed to improve performance. The target temperature can be reset depending on your preference so you can have the card run more quietly for everyday tasks and older games, and run at full tilt during intense high-resolution gaming sequences.&#;

Not only does this function work, it works brilliantly &#; but its impact on the overclocking results you may see has been poorly explained. The effective, sustained boost clock of our GTX wasn&#;t MHz &#; it was MHz. When our GPU started throwing artifacts at the +MHz overclocking mark, it wasn&#;t running at MHz, but over 2GHz.

This has two practical implications for enthusiasts. First, if your GPU doesn&#;t seem to overclock well, make sure you use GPU-Z to check your GPU&#;s actual top-end frequency. If your card is running at MHz or higher to start with, you may not see much headroom because there&#;s not much headroom left to take advantage of. Second, improving your system cooling or GPU cooler may yield better results than just cranking up clock speed sliders. The and are both designed to take temperature and TDP into consideration when calculating your max available frequency, so a GPU that is redlining won&#;t see much benefit regardless of the settings you dial into any overclocking application.

Gigabyte&#;s Xtreme Software Tuner: Surprisingly functional

For years, OEMs have included various bits of customized software with their video cards and motherboards &#; and for years, these included bundles haven&#;t been very good. At best, these utilities tend to offer a themed skin for an otherwise-free bit of software.

Gigabyte&#;s Xtreme Engine is a remarkable exception to this trend. The software offers both the option to tweak your GPU&#;s color palette and shift pattern as well as the ability to overclock the card directly or define a custom fan profile. The color palette and customization options are shown above.

Clock controls are laid out in a way that allows the end user to define either a percentile increase or to make a flat adjustment, MHz by MHz. None of these options is revolutionary, but they&#;re presented well.

Users who don&#;t want to delve too deeply into the more arcane settings can make simple changes from the &#;Easy Settings&#; menu. OC Mode slightly increases the GPU&#;s clocks while Gaming Mode sets stock clocks to Nvidia&#;s reference design. Eco Mode sets slightly lower clocks and reduces power consumption. Clock offsets can also be controlled from here.

I don&#;t know how many people actually buy GPUs on the strength of their included software, but Gigabyte&#;s Xtreme Tuning Engine is actually pretty useful. The GeForce the company sent us also shipped in Gaming Mode by default, but switching over to the slightly faster OC Mode is easy.

Test Setup

The Gigabyte G1 is largely in a class of its own, at least as far as AMD is concerned. Still, we need to put some kind of figures from Team Red on the board, and after watching prices for several weeks, there&#;s been multiple Fury X&#;s selling for around the $ mark. That&#;s roughly the same price band as the GTX is selling into, so it&#;s our point of comparison for this review.

All GPUs were tested with a Haswell X eight-core CPU and an Asus XDeluxe motherboard. Nvidia&#;s and AMD&#;s driver were used for the appropriate cards. All of our power consumption figures were run using an Antec W 80 Plus Gold PSU, not the larger-but-less efficient Thermaltake 80 Plus we used for a number of older reviews.

All GPUs were tested in both p and 4K, as these represent two of the most common resolutions. Let&#;s see what Gigabyte&#;s GTX G1 Gaming can do, shall we?

BioShock Infinite

BioShock Infinite is a DirectX 11 title from We tested the game in p and 4K with maximum detail and the alternate depth-of-field method. While BioShock Infinite isn’t a particularly difficult lift for any mainstream graphics card, it’s a solid last-gen title based on the popular Unreal Engine 3.

The Fury X and GTX Ti actually put up a very solid fight in BioShock Infinite, with the GTX Ti actually narrowly winning at p and losing by just 4% in 4K. AMD&#;s Radeon R9 Fury X also puts up competitive numbers.

Company of Heroes 2

Company of Heroes 2 is an RTS game that’s known for putting a hefty load on GPUs, particularly at the highest detail settings. Unlike most of the other games we tested, COH 2 doesn’t support multiple GPUs. We tested the game with all settings set to “High,” with V-Sync disabled.

Here, we see a larger difference between the GTX Ti and the GTX , with Nvidia&#;s newer GPU pulling ahead in 4K by 13%. The gains are narrower compared with the Radeon R9 Fury X, but AMD&#;s GCN has always performed better in 4K than p compared with Team Green. Overall the GTX leads the pack, though not by a huge margin.

Metro Last Light Redux

Metro Last Light Redux is the remastered version of Metro Last Light with an updated texture model and additional lighting details. Metro Last Light Redux’s benchmark puts a fairly heavy load on the system and should be seen as a worst-case run for overall game performance. We test the game at Very High detail with SSAA enabled.

Redux

At p the Gigabyte GTX is a full x faster than the GTX and 11% faster than both the R9 Fury X and the GTX Ti. None of our GPUs can handle 4K with SSAA, which isn&#;t surprising, considering that workload will be closer to 8K than 4K. The GTX is still about 6% faster than the GTX Ti and a consistent x faster than the GTX

Total War: Rome 2

Total War: Rome II is the sequel to the earlier Total War: Rome title. It’s fairly demanding on modern cards, particularly at the highest detail levels. We tested at maximum detail levels in p and 4K with SSAO and Vignette enabled.

TW

Total War: Rome 2 is only a modest win for the Gigabyte G1 at p, but the GPU extends its lead to % at 4K. That&#;s not enough of a lead to justify upgrading from a card as expensive as the GTX Ti, but if you dropped $ on a GTX a few years back the is a 41% frame rate improvement at 4K.

Shadow of Mordor

Shadow of Mordor is a third-person open-world game that takes place in between The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Think of it as Grand Theft Ringwraith, and you’re on the right track. We tested at maximum detail in p and 4K with FXAA enabled (the only AA option available).

Mordor

In Shadow of Mordor, the GTX runs the tables at both p and 4K. Even AMD&#;s Fury X, which pulls ahead of the GTX Ti by almost 9% at the higher resolution can&#;t catch Nvidia&#;s 16nm Pascal GPU here.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition is one of the greatest role playing games of all time, with a gorgeous Frostbite 3-based engine. While it supports Mantle, we’ve actually stuck with Direct3D in this title, as the D3D implementation has proven to be superior in previous testing.

While DAI does include an in-game benchmark, we’ve used a manual test run instead. The in-game test often runs more quickly than the actual title, and is a relatively simple test compared with how the game handles combat. Our test session focuses on the final evacuation of the town of Haven, and the multiple encounters that the Inquisitor faces as the party struggles to reach the chantry doors. We tested the game at maximum detail with 4x MSAA.

DAI

DAI&#;s MSAA gives even high-end GPUs a fit at 4K and the Gigabyte G1 is no exception. While it&#;s slightly faster than the GTX Ti, it&#;s not fast enough to actually render a playable frame rate. At p, none of our test GPUs have a problem with the game at these detail settings and the &#;s 10% gain over the GTX Ti is noticeable, but not extraordinary. The GTX , in contrast, is left far behind at both detail levels, even if it handles the p settings capably enough.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

The sequel to &#;s rebooted Tomb Raider franchise, Rise of the Tomb Raider has been recently updated with improved DirectX 12 support. We tested the game at the Very High detail preset with FXAA enabled at p and 4K.

Rise

One of the discrepancies between Maxwell and AMD&#;s GCN has always been the way the two architectures handled p vs. 4K. AMD GPUs tend to take a much smaller hit when stepping up to 4K and that&#;s definitely on display here &#; at p, the Fury X is barely faster than the GTX and far behind the GTX Ti and GTX Step up to 4K, and the Fury X is x faster than the GTX and basically tied with the GTX Ti. Both cards are surpassed, however, by the Gigabyte G1 Gaming, which outperforms the GTX Ti by a further x.

Ashes of the Singularity

Ashes of the Singularity is one of the first mainstream DirectX 12 titles. It’s an RTS game that’s designed to take full advantage of DX12 features like asynchronous compute and we’ve covered it since it launched in Early Access almost a year ago. We benchmarked the game in × with the Extreme detail preset.

Ashes

Ashes of the Singularity is a rare win for AMD&#;s older Fury X, but it also highlights the strength of the Pascal family compared with Nvidia&#;s Maxwell GPUs. The GTX ties the Fury X at p but slips narrowly behind at 4K. It&#;s interesting to see the same p/4K distinction between Pascal and GCN &#; like Maxwell, Pascal tends to lose slightly more top-end performance than AMD does when we step up the resolution.

While it doesn&#;t take the lead in this title, the Gigabyte GTX is still % faster than the top-end Maxwell card we tested.

Doom

The latest first-person shooter from id is a fabulous update to the original game and absolutely worth playing if you want an updated take on one of the most beloved titles of the s. We tested Doom at a single resolution (p), but benchmarked it in both OpenGL and Vulkan to measure how AMD and Nvidia would perform in the same title under two different APIs.

Our test sequence is a six-minute battle through The Foundry, starting when the doors open to the level and finishing after the destruction of the third gore nest. There are a number of fire and smoke effects in this level, as well as plenty of demon-slaughtering and dodging around some reasonably open areas.

Doom

In OpenGL, the Radeon Fury X is one of the slowest cards, while it&#;s obviously the fastest in Vulkan by no small margin. This is partly due to the general condition of AMD&#;s OpenGL consumer driver, which isn&#;t as robust as Nvidia&#;s, but also reflects the improve GPU utilization that AMD gets when operating in a lower-overhead API with support for asynchronous computing.

The performance gains for Nvidia are fairly small &#; the is again slightly faster than the GTX Ti, but all of the cards turn in excellent results.

Power consumption

Our power consumption data is gathered from looping Metro Last Light Redux 3x and measuring system power consumption at the wall during the third loop. We&#;ve been retesting our GPUs with a W Antec 80 Plus Gold power supply, rather than the W 80 Plus Thermaltake we used to use, so our figures have changed somewhat since older reviews were published.

First, we&#;ll look at total power consumption as measured at the wall.

SystemPower

The GTX doesn&#;t draw the least amount of power in our tests &#; the GTX has that honor &#; but it&#;s only slightly above the GTX , while significantly below both the GTX Ti and the Fury X. What happens when we factor power efficiency into the picture?

WattsPerFrame

We&#;ve included the R9 Nano in this graph as its AMD&#;s most power-efficient GPU from the 28nm generation. While the R9 Nano is capable of matching the GTX and Ti, none of the 28nm GPUs hold a candle to the GTX , which offers substantially better efficiency than any other card on the market. We&#;ll have to wait for Vega, AMD&#;s next-generation architecture due late this year to see if Team Red can counter Team Green in terms of absolute power efficiency.

Conclusion

The best conclusions pretty much write themselves &#; and this is one of them. With a top boosted frequency at MHz on our testbed, the Gigabyte GTX G1 Gaming has some serious legs on it. It&#;s quiet under load, maintains excellent temperatures, and it&#;s the most power-efficient GPU we&#;ve ever tested. Overclocking headroom wasn&#;t very high, but that&#;s relative to the maintained frequency of MHz, which was excellent.

If you upgraded to a GTX Ti or Titan X last year, the isn&#;t going to be fast enough to interest you, but gamers with lower-end cards, up to and including the GTX can see significant frame rate improvements by upgrading to this card.

GTX

One thing the GTX demonstrates is that we&#;re hitting the end of p as a test resolution for upper-end cards in many cases. While it&#;s still the most common resolution and therefore important for that reason alone, it&#;s simply not demanding enough to really show differences between various cards. We&#;re not ready to pull the curtains on FHD just yet, but the day is coming when high-end GPUs from any company will pack more firepower than the resolution can realistically showcase.

There are just two caveats that we&#;d like to note about the G1 Gaming GTX First, our GPU&#;s boost frequency was very good &#; so good, in fact, that it may be at the upper end of the curve as far as maximum clock speeds are concerned. Boost frequencies aren&#;t guaranteed by Nvidia, so your mileage will vary depending on the characteristics of your case and cooling.

Second, the G1 Gaming is still selling for $, a $40 premium over where the GTX is supposed to sell. It&#;s possible that these cards will come down more as availability improves, though that might not happen &#; with no strong competition from AMD at the moment, it&#;s entirely possible that GeForce prices will remain higher until AMD launches Vega and provides competition for them.

Speaking of AMD, well, we&#;ve got good news and bad news on that front. If you bought a Fury, Fury X, or Fury Nano last year, the GTX &#;s performance improvement over those cards isn&#;t high enough to send most people running to spend more money &#; but the &#;s overall strengths put it in a much better position through the end of this cycle. The Fury X&#;s relatively limited memory pool is due to its use of HBM, but the RX now offers twice the memory at nearly half the price. With 14nm GPUs now available, it&#;s difficult to recommend 28nm cards as competition.

Unless you&#;re determined to save $40 or to see what AMD brings to market, we&#;d go ahead and pull the trigger on this one. You&#;re unlikely to regret it.

If there's one thing we've come to expect from Gigabyte's G1 Gaming cards, it's the highest possible performance at a reasonable price. The company's GeForce GTX G1 Gaming 8G follows that familiar mission with three fans and a fairly bold-looking fan shroud.

Technical Specifications

Exterior & Interfaces

The fan shroud is made of anthracite-colored matte plastic with decorative orange highlights. Weighing in at a modest grams, the G1 Gaming 8G is a true flyweight. A length of cm should fit easily in most cases, and a height of cm is about average. The cm width is typical of dual-slot designs.

A total of three 80mm fans are meant to ensure the right amount of airflow and pressure. The fact that you can't tell these fans are fairly small is due to the card's proportions, which make it look bigger than it actually is.

The back of the board is covered by a single-piece plate made of what looks like anodized aluminum and adorned with a white Gigabyte logo (there is no back-lighting). This backplate makes it necessary to plan for an extra 5mm of clearance behind the card, which may be relevant in multi-GPU configurations.

Up top, the card is branded with a Gigabyte logo back-lit by an RGB LED. There's also a fan-stop indicator and an eight-pin auxiliary power connector.

A peek at the end and bottom of the GeForce GTX G1 Gaming 8G reveals that its fins are oriented vertically. They won't allow any waste heat to exhaust out the back. Instead, hot air is pushed from the top and bottom, warming up other components in your case, along with your motherboard underneath. As such, this design decision is rather counterproductive.

The slot plate features five display outputs, of which a maximum of four can be used simultaneously in a multi-monitor setup. In addition to one dual-link DVI-D connector, the bracket also hosts one HDMI b port and three DisplayPort capable interfaces. The rest of the slot plate has openings cut into it, which look like they're meant to help with airflow. In this configuration, however, they're not functional due to Gigabyte's fin design.

Board & Components

Gigabyte's PCB is proprietary with some conservative (yet interesting) component choices.

This card uses eight Samsung K4GFB-HC25 modules with a capacity of 8Gb (32x Mb). Each chip operates at voltages between and V, depending on the selected clock frequency.

One unique addition is the Holtek HT32F bit ARM Cortex-M0+ MCU, which Gigabyte uses for controlling the card's RGB effects.

Gigabyte employs an almost oversized 6+2-phase design, wherein the six GPU phases are supplied by uPI Group's uP eight-phase buck controller.

The GPU's voltage regulation is implemented using one Alpha & Omega AON N-channel AlphaMOS on the low side of each phase and one AONA on the high side. What's interesting about these two MOSFETs is the low internal resistance across their performance range, as well as the low control values for the gates. It is thus safe to assume that this choice is an attempt to minimize voltage converter losses.

Gigabyte uses Foxconn's Magic coils, which are fully encapsulated and easy to install during automated assembly.

The memory's two phases are supplied by an unmarked PWM controller, which should roughly correspond to a uP 2/1-phase synchronous buck controller. It already comes with an integrated bootstrap Schottky diode and gate driver. The high- and low-side MOSFETs are similar to what we found on the GPU's power phases. Just the coils are slightly smaller.

Current monitoring is handled by a triple-channel Texas Instruments INA Two familiar capacitors are installed right below the GPU to absorb and equalize voltage peaks.

Power Results

Before we look at power consumption, we should talk about the correlation between GPU Boost frequency and core voltage, which are so similar that we decided to put their graphs one on top of the other. This also shows that both curves drop as the GPU's temperature rises. Gigabyte uses a power target of ~W, which in turn causes a relatively frenetic GPU Boost frequency. Short-term drops in clock rate hint that we, at least temporarily, hit the card's power limit.

After a warm-up run through our variable gaming load, the card's GPU Boost clock rate settles at an average MHz, down from a starting point of MHz. Under a more constant load, it falls to an average of MHz.

The voltage measurements look similar. Readings around V drop to V as the board's frequency slides.

Combining the measured voltages and currents allows us to derive a total power consumption we can easily confirm with our instrumentation by taking readings at the card's power connectors.

As a result of restrictions imposed by Nvidia, whereby the lowest attainable frequencies are sacrificed to hit higher GPU Boost clock rates, the power consumption of many factory-overclocked cards is disproportionately high when they're idle. This one can only go as low as MHz. The following table shows what impact that has on our measurements:

The A we measure provides lots of margin below the PCI-SIG's A maximum for a PCIe slot, especially if you're using this card on an older motherboard. Gigabyte only feeds the memory through the PCIe slot; the other six phases are powered through the auxiliary eight-pin connector.

Temperature Results

Gigabyte's backplate doesn't play an active role in cooling the GeForce GTX G1 Gaming 8G. It's mostly aesthetic, though the plate does contribute to the card's structural rigidity.

The built-in, two-stage heat sink for VRM and coils deserves a positive mention. We also like the fact that the memory modules are cooled directly by this simple design's stabilizing frame.

A direct consequence of this simplicity, unfortunately, is an uninspired and cheap-looking thermal solution. It consists of a finned sink with a thick aluminum base plate that also serves as a mount for two 8mm heat pipes in a flattened direct touch configuration. These pipes don't even cover the GPU entirely. They're hardly sufficient for moving excess heat. It would have been more appropriate for Gigabyte to use three heat pipes instead.

Of course, a maximum GPU temperature of °F (64°C) keeps this card in the green. But a safe thermal ceiling isn't attributable to the cooler, but rather Gigabyte's very low temperature target. After hitting that ceiling, the fans are audibly hard at work.

Looking at our infrared images, we see that the GPU package (and thus the PCB) is slightly warmer than the cooled GPU itself. A reading of °F (78°C) on the voltage converters is also bearable. But that's not surprising given dedicated cooling.

The same holds true when we run our stress test and observe the temperature rising only marginally. This cooler is merely acceptable, since it's already operating at its limit.

Sound Results

Hysteresis is perfectly implemented; there is no annoying on/off/on loop to worry about. However, permanent fan speeds above RPM are certainly nothing to celebrate, since they're clearly audible.

Although we've heard worse than dB(A) under full load, Gigabyte's fans are still significantly louder than many other GeForce GTX s, and unnecessarily so.

Testing Method

For the purposes of testing the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX G1 Gaming graphics card, and for all future graphics card reviews and articles, we've changed up our benchmark suite. I've removed Battlefield 4, GRID: Autosport, BioShock: Infinite, and Grand Theft Auto V. In their place, I've got Far Cry Primal and The Division.

I've also added in some DX12 testing, with Hitman and Ashes of the Singularity. This will provide us with enough variety, but I'm on the hunt for new benchmarks all the time. The second that Battlefield 1 drops, we'll be including that in our GPU reviews, while I'll also be keeping an eye out on the release of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Benchmarks - DX12 & OC Adventures

This is our new section for video card reviews, with DX12 and VR becoming a huge deal over the course of the last 12 months. We have just a handful of DX12 tests right now, so expect this section of the site and our reviews to grow considerably over the coming months.

Overclocking Adventures - To Be Continued

With the single 8-pin PCIe power connector, it's enough to handle the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX G1 Gaming under intense gaming loads, but it has some room for a pretty good overclock. The OC Mode had its boost clock at MHz, while I was able to hit MHz boost when I overclocked the card. This resulted in a nice boost in performance while kicking the power up by 20W, up to W for our full system power consumption.

The additional performance was welcomed, as you can see in our 3DMark FireStrike benchmarks:

Power, Temperature, & Noise

Power Consumption

All of our GeForce GTX s have been scattered with power consumption, with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX Founders Edition and my entire Core iX test bed consuming W. The GeForce GTX Founders Edition sits at around W, while the overclocked GIGABYTE GeForce GTX G1 Gaming sits at W. When it's overclocked, the GTX G1 Gaming card uses an additional W more power, while it uses an additional 20W on average.

Temperature & Noise

GIGABYTE has a cool graphics card on its hands with the GeForce GTX G1 Gaming card, with the card sitting at around 63C under load. The fans would spin up and keep the card cool, but you couldn't hear the sound coming from the fan when you were gaming at all - you'd really have to be in a quiet room to notice it.

Performance Summary

The performance of the GeForce GTX Founders Edition is enough for most people, but with the tweaks that GIGABYTE has made to its GeForce GTX G1 Gaming edition card, those numbers not only improve, the acoustics and temperatures are lower. GIGABYTE's card is also the better looking of the two, and it does have some pretty kick ass cooling technology, too.

If you're using a p monitor, you'll be able to hit 60FPS+ in every game on the market, and anything coming soon. You could tweak some details and use the GTX G1 Gaming edition card on a high refresh rate screen, with FPS easily achievable with a mix of medium and high graphics. Up at x things will change a little, but 60FPS+ is no problems for the GTX G1 Gaming card, and again you'll probably hit FPS average if you tweaked the visuals and went at around medium settings.

GIGABYTE's new GeForce GTX G1 Gaming graphics card will also handle the heavy hitters like 4K and VR, which both require considerable GPU horsepower. I had absolutely no issues at 4K, enjoying some 60FPS+ performance in most of my games. When it came to VR, the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX G1 Gaming is more than fast enough to handle even the most intensive VR game like Raw Data on the HTC Vive.

Final Thoughts

Wrapping things up, GIGABYTE has an excellent value for money product with their GeForce GTX G1 Gaming graphics card. It has nearly the same performance as the more expensive GTX but is a boat load cheaper - nearly $ cheaper than the GeForce GTX Founders Edition.

If you're gaming at high refresh rates like /Hz and at p or p, the GTX G1 Gaming graphics card will suit your needs. If you're a 4K gamer or want to dabble in some VR gaming with the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, then GIGABYTE will have you covered. The GTX isn't as fast as the GTX , but it's also much cheaper. Upgrade paths include moving to an SLI system, where 2 x GIGABYTE GeForce GTX G1 Gaming Edition graphics cards in SLI would make for a super-fast gaming setup.

GIGABYTE continues to impress with its G1 Gaming graphics cards, and while the GTX G1 Gaming edition is faster, the GTX G1 Gaming is cheaper and is pretty damn powerful. The GTX s have been impressing me more for the performance/dollar ratio, and GIGABYTE has won me over once again with their GTX G1 Gaming graphics card. Mad performance for not-so-insane money.

We review the Gigabyte GeForce GTX G1 GAMING. This puppy is factory customized and comes all tweaked and cooled so much better opposed to the founders edition. And it looks fantastic as well. Join me in a review of this 8 GB demon From Gigabyte, the GTX G1 GAMING located under SKU code GV-NG1 GAMING-8GD with that all new WindForce cooler. The has been a hit ever since the its release a coupld of weeks ago. Crazy stuff, and that is testimony to the fact that you guys have been waiting very long on the new graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia. It's for good reason, the graphics card industry, or the GPU industry has been on hold, waiting for a smaller GPU fabrication process to become viable. Last generation GPUs were based on a 28 nm fabrication, an intermediate move to 20 nm was supposed to be the answer for today’s GPUs, but it was a problematic technology. Aside from some smaller ASICs the 20 nm node has been a fail. Therefore the industry had to wait until an ever newer and smaller fabrication process was available in order to shrink the die which allows for less voltage usage in the chips, less transistor gate leakage and, obviously, more transistors in a GPU. The answer was to be found in the recent 14/15/16 nm fabrication processors and processes with the now all too familiar FinFET + VLSI technology (basically wings on a transistor). Intel has been using it for a while, and now both Nvidia and AMD are moving towards such nodes as well. Nvidia is the first to announce their new products based on a TSMC 16 nm process fab by introducing Pascal GPU architecture, named after the mathematician much like Kepler, Maxwell and Fermi. That stage has now passed, the GeForce GTX and have been announced with the slowly becoming available in stores as we speak, the cards you'll start to see selling by next week (June 10th ). Both cards are equally impressive in it's product positioning, though I do feel the will be the more attractive product due to it's price level, the cards really is what everybody want (but perhaps can't afford). The good news though is that the board partner cards will sell for less opposed to the Nvidia reference / Founder edition cars. Obviously the higher-end all customized SKUs will likely level with that founders edition card price level again, but I am pretty certain you'd rather spend your money on a fully customized AIB card that is already factory tweaked a bit opposed the the reference one. 

The Gigabyte GeForce GTX G1 Gaming is fitted with a high-end Pascal GP based GPU. A product series that is to replace the GeForce GTX The card has a nice dark aesthetic feel and comes with the new revised ACX cooler. The GeForce GTX is all about that Pascal GP GPU, yet for obvious reasons had to be slowed down a bit opposed to the  The GeForce GTX might have the same GP GPU housed on it's PCB as that , however it is a cut-down version of the GPU as Nvidia stripped away some segments. Where the GeForce GTX has shader processors, the GeForce GTX has  shader processors. This means it is has 15 out of the 20 SMs active (15 streaming multi-processors x shader cores). In order of magnitude, the secondary biggest change is the memory type being "regular GDDR5" memory and not the new and hip GDDR5X. That memory is clocked at 2, MHz which is 8 GHz (GDDR5-effective) at a memory bandwidth of GB/s. The two differences are responsible for a performance drop from 9 TFLOP/s Single-precision floating point performance for the GeForce GTX towards TFLOP/s for the GeForce GTX

The Gigabyte GTX G1 GAMING fitted with a Pascal GP based GPU is a product series that actually was released is to replace the GeForce GTX It's all custom and fitted with Gigabytes latest model WINDFORCE 3X cooler. The cooler is direct heatpipe touch based, meaning the heatpipes actually sit on top of the GPU. Much like many premium graphics cards up-to 60 Degrees C the card will even stay in passive mode, e.g. the fans will not spin. The WINDFORCE 3X cooler is now intensified a top RGB LED logo which can be color controlled and animated. You will spot one 8-pin power connector and at the backside you'll find a matte black solid backplate. The Gigabyte GeForce GTX G1 GAMING has default clock frequencies of  MHz (boost) / MHz (base) with a reference clocked MB GDDR5 / MHz effective data-rate on the memory. With the help of XTREME ENGINE software by pressing a button the card will go into OC mode and gets a 26 MHz overclock. That OC mode requires you to have the software active at all times, hence we will not use it. We test the graphics card at its default out of the box and thus BIOS settings. Let's head on-wards in the review.
