SRS99-AM sniper rifle

The Sniper Rifle System 99 Anti-Matériel, (formally known as the Special Applications Rifle, Caliber 14.5 mm, SRS99),[3] is a sniper rifle produced by Misriah Armory and used by the UNSC Armed Forces, and a part of the broader SRS99 family of weapons. The SRS99 entered service with the Army in 2460. Because of its modularity and ongoing manufacturer support, the SRS99 was adopted by all branches in 2521.[1][3]

Design details[edit]

Main article: SRS99 Series

The SRS99 is a semi-automatic, gas-operated rifle that fires 14.5×114mm ammunition from a four-round detachable box magazine. The ejection port is on the right side of the weapon and the charging handle is on the left side. Unlike all other known models of the SRS99 series, this variant features a thumbhole stock instead of a pistol grip, and its body sports a black and navy blue finish in addition to the gray of its successors. The SRS99 is equipped with the Oracle N-variant scope,[1] which can display green outlines of objects when not in active use.

Gameplay[edit]

Advantages[edit]

The SRS99 series is designed to be used at medium to long ranges and is equipped with an electronic scope for precisely this purpose. It is tremendously useful in its designated role, considering its extraordinary range, which surpasses any other weapon of comparable size, and its incredible stopping power even against body armor and Covenant shielding system.

In multiplayer, the SRS99 can be highly effective at close range in the hands of a skilled operator, as the highly damaging round is just as powerful at close range; a single round followed by a melee strike will kill a hostile almost instantly.

Disadvantages[edit]

The rifle's projectile has a slight travel time at great distances, and requires practice to use effectively at range. When used in close quarters, its precision nature, slow reload time, small magazine capacity, heavy recoil, and slow rate-of-fire leave precious little room for error. A small combat load and the relative scarcity of ammunition available for the weapon also make it bad practice to expend ammunition on smaller, less threatening combatants, such as Grunts. Rounds fired by the SRS99 leave a trail that could be traced back to the sniper's location.

Changes from the SRS99D-S2 AM in Halo 3[edit]

  • Increased damage against vehicles, destroying them with four to six rounds.
  • Has a thumbhole stock rather than a pistol grip.
  • Updated colors.
  • Scope is smaller.
  • Can neutralize a Scorpion tank in two shots, one to destroy the canopy, and a headshot to kill the now-exposed driver.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary[edit]

In Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary the original SRS99C-S2 AM sniper rifle is replaced with the SRS99's model. However, as the change is merely aesthetic, it performs identically to its Halo: Combat Evolved counterpart.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta, the scope shows the identity of the weapon's user as "ID-NOBLE6", regardless of who wields it. This is not present in the final build.
  • At the beginning of the campaign level Nightfall, the player receives fifty rounds instead of the default maximum of twenty. This is a tribute to the level The Truth and Reconciliation from Halo: Combat Evolved, in which the player begins with a larger-than-normal number of sniper rifle rounds.
  • The weapon's reticule bloom has almost no effect on gameplay. However, its accuracy is not 100% perfect due to bloom. This can be proven by enabling the Bottomless Clip option in gametype settings, then firing the rifle as fast as possible. Eventually, the reticle will be fully expanded, proving that each shot is very slightly skewed.

The NTW-20 is a South African anti-materiel rifle, developed by Denel Mechem in the 1990s. It is intended for deployment against targets including parked aircraft, telecommunication masts, power lines, missile sites, radar installations, refineries, satellite dishes, gun emplacements, bunkers and personnel, using a range of specialised projectiles.[1] As with other weapons of this type, it can also be used for counter sniping and ordnance disposal (shooting explosive ordnance from a safe distance).[citation needed]

Development[edit]

The weapon was designed by Tony Neophytou (co-designer of the Neostead combat shotgun). Development of the system began in August 1995 under the "Aerotek" name and a working prototype was ready for testing four and a half months later. This rapid progress was made possible by Neophytou's expertise in the field of recoil reduction systems, having worked on helicopter turrets in the past. To further reduce the amount of research and development, the project recycled the barrel, bolt and barrel extension of the existing Vektor GA1automatic cannon.[2] It was put into production by Denel Land Systems in two versions; 20 x 110[3] and 20 x 82.[4] The latter model is also available in 14.5 x 114 and conversion between the calibres can be done in the field by swapping the barrel and bolt assembly. The significantly larger 20 x 110 model cannot be converted to another calibre.[5] The rifle was accepted into service with the South African National Defence Force in 1998.[citation needed].

Features[edit]

Switching between the two calibres of the NTW (20×82mm and 14.5×114mm) requires changing the bolt, barrel, sighting gear and magazine. (A third variant, the NTW 20×110mm has been developed, but is not designed for barrel calibre switching.) Caliber switching the NTW 20/14.5 can be accomplished in the field without specialised tools. The magazine protrudes from the left side of the receiver. The NTW can be disassembled and packed into two backpacks for carriage. A muzzle brake is fitted on the end of the barrel which absorbs an estimated 50%–60% of recoil. This is further supplemented by a buffered slide in the receiver.

Influence[edit]

Denel Land Systems was contracted to supply weapon systems for the Indian Armed Forces, including anti-materiel rifles and self-propelled howitzers. However, following allegations that it had paid kickbacks to secure a deal for anti-materiel rifles, Denel was blacklisted by the Indian government. Subsequently, the Ordnance Factory Tiruchirappalli (OFT), in association with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), began developing an indigenous anti-material rifle called Vidhwansak, which borrowed heavily from the Denel NTW-20. The development of Vidhwansak was completed in November 2005.[6] The embargo against Denel was lifted in 2018 after investigations found the allegations to have been false.[7]

So Halo takes place 500 years in the future, but we managed to create a Sniper Rifle identical to the one in the game in modern times. Do humans randomly not do anything for 500 years or something?

as long as they account for the bullet drop, I'm sure its fine.  It's designed to be shot from extremely long distances and apparently has enough penetrating power to do hellatious damage to extremely thick, reinforced targets.

If I can find the bullet speeds, I'll post them.

Edit: found it - 'A 20-mm shell moves about 500 m/sec (about 1,600 ft/sec). This translates to 1,800 km/hour (1,100 miles/hour).'

That is slow as hell, and with weight it'd drop like a rock. I also imagine it loses velocity quick.
I just imagine it'd be a tough thing to compensate for with all the ranges and the fact that it is so slow and heavy.

I just don't think it's a practical gun.
For one it's not used by any country besides India and South Africa gotta be a reason. lol
It weights over 60 pounds. And .50 caliber does just about the same job, more efficiently and accurately.

But to own one would be so badass. :D

I still don't trust the bullet drop and ranges thing. All the shots in video were taken from up high.
If he was a little more level with the target that bullet might've just struck ground.

"In 20-mm format the rifle fires the 20x83.5 MG151 cartridge fired by the Vektor 20-mm GA1 cannon; the round is manufactured by Pretoria Metal Pressings (PMP). Ammunition natures fired by the NTW-20 include HEI, HEI-T, SAPHEI and Practice. Muzzle velocity is 720 m/sec and the operational range is given as up to 1,500 meters. In 14.5-mm form the cartridge fired is the Russian 14.5x114 in API and API-T form; muzzle velocity is 1,800 m/sec and a maximum effective range up to 2,300 meters.

Changing from one caliber to another takes less than 60 seconds. The barrel, bolt, magazine and sighting equipment can be interchanged between the two calibers as required."

jesus.

oh and another comparison pic

I can'd find any good 14.5mm pics.  but they're a little smaller than the 20mm and thus, faster.
