UPS To Hire Over 100,000 For Holiday Season

UPS (NYSE: UPS) announced today that it expects to hire over 100,000 seasonal employees to support the anticipated annual increase in package volume that will begin in October 2020 and continue through January 2021.
“We’re preparing for a record peak holiday season. The COVID-19 pandemic has made our services more important than ever,” said Charlene Thomas, Chief Human Resources Officer. “We plan to hire over 100,000 people for UPS’s seasonal jobs, and anticipate a large number will move into permanent roles after the holidays. At a time when millions of Americans are looking for work, these jobs are an opportunity to start a new career with UPS.”
The company is filling full- and part-time seasonal positions – primarily package handlers, drivers, driver-helpers, and personal vehicle drivers – by offering competitive wages across multiple shifts in thousands of locations across the country.
Over the last three years, about 35% of people hired by UPS for seasonal package handler jobs were later hired in a permanent position when the holidays were over, and about 123,000 UPS employees – nearly a third of the company’s U.S. workforce – started in seasonal positions.
That opportunity for a permanent job is important to many. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of seasonal hires want their job to turn into a long-term position, according to a recent survey of Americans who hold, held or would consider a seasonal job.*
Through the company’s Earn and Learn program, eligible seasonal employees who are students can earn up to $1,300 towards college expenses, in addition to their hourly pay, for three months of continuous employment. UPS has invested nearly $670 million in tuition assistance – nearly $30 million a year since the program was established in 1997 – helping over 300,000 employees pay for their college education.

Permanent UPS jobs – including part-time jobs – come with great pay and benefits, including healthcare and retirement benefits. At many UPS locations, part-time employees are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in tuition assistance through Earn and Learn.

Fast hiring: UPS to hire 100,000, many in 30 minutes or less
NEW YORK -- Besides packages, UPS is promising to deliver something else fast: job offers.
The package delivery company said Thursday that it plans to hire more than 100,000 people for the busy holiday shipping season, many of whom will get job offers within 30 minutes of applying.
UPS needs to snap up workers as fast as it can because of the tight job market. Competition for hourly workers is fierce, and many companies are offering higher pay, sign-on bonuses and even lowering their requirements, such as hiring those without a high school diploma. Take too long to hire, and an applicant can go elsewhere.
“Candidates want instant gratification,” said Matt Lavery, UPS’s global director of sourcing and recruiting. “We wanted to take away as many barriers as we could.”
The speedy hiring applies to its most common jobs for seasonal workers: package handlers and driver helpers, who take a package from a truck and deliver it to doorsteps, but don't drive the vehicle.
The company said it whittled down its hiring decisions to half-an-hour by having applicants submit all their paperwork online and forgoing interviews. Applicants could be working as soon as a day or two. Before it would take up to two weeks with all the scheduling that had to be done for interviews, according to Lavery.
Atlanta-based UPS said it pays between $15 per hour and $22 per hour, depending where in the country the job is. In some areas of the country, where it's tougher to find workers, it offers bonuses that could hike up the hourly rate, the company said.

UPS announced Thursday that it plans to hire more than 100,000 temporary workers for the upcoming holiday season, saying many of those will get a job offer within 30 minutes of applying.
The package delivery company wants to boost its workforce for the months of October through January, which UPS expects to be another “record peak holiday season.”
“We plan to hire more than 100,000 people for seasonal jobs, many of whom will have an offer in hand within 30 minutes of applying. Our seasonal hires will help us provide the most reliable service in the industry, just like we did last year,” Nando Cesarone, president of the company’s U.S. operations, said in a statement.
Cesarone did not detail how the company plans to speed up its hiring process, but another UPS official told the Associated Press that it would “take away as many barriers” as it can.
The nation’s current labor shortage suggests that might be the right move. U.S. businesses are struggling to find workers this summer, with the number of job openings surging to nearly 11 million in July while at least nine million people were out of a job, according to the Labor Department.
Experts have blamed the shortage on people’s unwillingness to accept low-paid jobs, reluctance to put themselves at a higher risk of getting COVID-19 as well as the government’s enhanced unemployment benefits, which expired this week.
UPS, which is said to pay seasonal workers between $15 to $22 an hour, is looking to hire full- and part-time employees for positions including package handlers, drivers, driver helpers and personal vehicle drivers.
The Atlanta-based company said one-third of seasonal workers hired as package handlers over the last three years landed a permanent job after the holidays. In addition, nearly one-third of the company’s current workforce started in seasonal positions, according to UPS.
Thursday’s announcement said UPS “encourages” applicants to receive a coronavirus vaccine.
