Becoming Tangled with Time

When you land on Time Tangled Island, go to your right, into the lab. Talk to the woman there to get a printout. This printout will give you background knowledge on what’s going on, if you want to read it. Anyway, go down and push the plug to activate the machine. Now, of course, walk into the future machine! When you get there however it looks pretty bad… Walk to the left and talk to the old version of yourself to figure out what the heck is going on and to get a cool time travel device. There is a sign you can also read.

Time Tangled 1.png

1953 AD Part 1

Use the time travel device to travel to Mount Everest, 1953. That time period is the man with goggles and blue hood. Just keep traveling on the path, up the mountain. Careful not to fall! If you talk to the two guys that are halfway up, one of them lost their goggles (that’s why they stopped hiking) Recognize them from history? 😉 Anyway, in the next section of the mountain, watch out for falling icicles. When you reach the top, you’ll find the Statue of Liberty. Plus, you’ve climbed Mount Everest! Congrats! 😛

1882 AD

Use the time travel device to go to 18812, during the creation of the Statue of Liberty. That time period is the guy with the brown beard, right after Mount Everest. Now enter the building to your left, called Gaget, Gauthier et Cie. (You can click to signs to change them!) Give the Statue of Liberty model you found to the man to the right. You have officially repaired this time period! On your time traveling device, this time period will now be greenish. But you’re not done here yet! Go outside, left, and up to the roof. Climb to the top of the structure that is there and jump as far as you can to the left. When you do this, you will get a notebook.

Time Tangled 2.png

1776 AD Part 1

I’d go to 1776 next, via your time travel device. It is the man with the ponytail and black hat. Travel to the right, avoiding the hedgehogs, until you get to the Graff House. Climb to the roof and get the bag of salt rocks from the chimney.

1387 AD

Now go to 1387 (the Mali Empire – Timbuktu), which is the woman with the white turban. Make your way to the top of the set of buildings, avoiding the snakes. Talk to the man in blue, wearing a white turban. You’ll give him your salt rocks and this time period would be restored! But we aren’t done here yet. 😉 Next, go to the other side of that big wall thing to your right. Go inside the Timbuktu Inn. Climb up to the man in white and solve the jigsaw puzzle. Once you’re done it should look like this…

Time Tangled 3.png

It’s a portrait of the Great King Mansa Musa! The man will then give you the Declaration of Independence. Time to go back to the Graff House…

1776 AD Part 2

Once your back in 1776, go inside the house and talk to Thomas Jefferson. He is the man with the black hat in in the upper right area. You will give him the Declaration and this time period will be restored! Huzzah!

1877 AD Part 1

After that go to 1877, Edison’s Workshop. This time period is the man with short brown air. Hop onto the vehicle to the left and click the circle onto of the bigger wheel to start it up. Once it stops you can climb the tree it stops under. Get to the very top and jump to the top of the nearby building. Get the piece of stone from the chimney.

Time Tangled 4.png

1519 AD

Once you’re done go to the Aztec Empire – 1519, which is the guy with the weird feather hat. To the right, try to get past the guards and climb the tower of steps. Talk to the man in the feather hat crying. You’ll give him the piece of stone, specifically the sun stone piece. This time zone should now be repaired. Go to the next building to the right. Talk to the old man there to get the Aztec Warrior Headdress. Put it on and talk to the left guard you had to get passed earlier. He will give you a pair of goggles he found.

Time Tangled 5.png

1953 AD Part 2

Travel back to Mount Everest. Climb up the mountain and return Edmund’s goggles. This time period is now repaired. Simple enough, right? Good job time traveler!

1516 AD

I would visit Leonardo da Vinci in 1516 next. He is the man with a gray beard and brown hat. Make your way up and enter Leo’s Workshop. Talk to Leo/Leonardo on the top floor and return his notebook. This time period should now be restored. As a reward, Leo will give you a glider! Put on the glider and get the peace medal, near the pulley system. Remember, you aren’t flying. You’re just falling with style. 😉

Time Tangled 6.png

1805 AD

Use your time device to go to 1805, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition is taking place! Or… took place. Anyway, it’s the man with the big brown hat. Walk to the right and climb up the tall tree with no leaves on it. At the top you’ll see a beaver with a bowl on his head pop out every couple seconds. Time it right and you’ll get the stone bowl. (If you noticed, there’s something carved into the tree! Looks like Clark was there before you.)

Time Tangled 7.png

Climb back down and go all the way to the left. Talk to Captain Meriwether Lewis and you’ll give him the peace medal. This time period is now fixed! Yay!

1593 AD

Click on the man with the black mustache and big helmet a.k.a. 1593, where the Great Wall of China is currently being built. Walk all the way to the right (or follow the dangerous trail of gunpowder) and pick up the barrel of gunpowder. Now climb the structure you past, but watch out for bricks! Talk to the man on the top right side of this structure. You get to play a memory game! 😛 To play, keep an eye on the card that is identical to the one at the top. Good luck! If you win, you get his hammer shaped amulet. Don’t worry if you didn’t win on your first try, it’s tricky. Go to the far left after you’ve won. Talk to the man that looks like a guard and give him the stone bowl. This time period is back to normal!

831 AD

Time to go visit some Vikings in 831! This period of time is the man with the helmet and orange beard. Talk to the first viking you see (in the yellow shirt) and return his amulet. This time period is now repaired! But we aren’t done here just yet. Make your way up those rocks to your right. At the top use your gunpowder to blast the entrance to the cave open. Enter the cave and you get a torch. Here is a map that will help guide you through the cave to the gold vase. But hurry! Your torch only lasts for a short period of time! If you’re wearing the glider, I would take it off. It’s only going to slow you down. Oh! And torches don’t work in water. Good luck! 😉 (Thank you Fierce Moon for the awesome map!)

Time Tangled 8.png

Don’t worry if you don’t make it on your first try, it’s tricky. Once you make it to the bottom, grab the gold vase. When you’re leaving the cave, it’s easier to jump in the water, so you’ll be teleported back to the entrance.

338 BC

Ever wanted to visit Ancient Greece? Well now’s your chance! Go to Ancient Greece (Delphi), 328. It is the man with the gold helmet and red… feathers (I think) at the top. Talk to the second soldier you see and give him the golden vase. As a reward, you are now allowed to speak to the Oracle on the hill. This time period should be fixed! You don’t have to talk to the Oracle though. She just tells you about a strange device on the roof of a building nearby. Anyway, try to get to the top of the building you are now in front of and you’ll get Edison’s Phonograph. You can get to the roof by jumping on the statue to the right. If you want, you can listen to the Phonograph play Mary Had a Little Lamb. Edison actually is the one singing too! Since you now have his phonograph, go back to Edison’s Workshop in 1877!

Time Tangled 9.png

1877 AD Part 2

Go inside Edison’s Workshop and find the man in the red vest – Edison. He should be at the top left of the building. Talk to him and you’ll give him his Phonograph. This time period is restored! Good job!

Back to the Future

After you repaired every time period, all the sections on the time traveling device should be green. Travel back to the lab and visit the future again. Everything should look different. Happier and more peacefully. Take your time to travel to your sky home by going up tubes and above fans. Your sky home entrance should look like this:

Time Tangled 10.png

Go inside and find your future self. Take to them and you get your island medallion!

Time Tangled 11.png

Congrats! You’ve completed Time Tangled Island! To head back to Main Street, use your time device and click the Lab button. 😀

Trivia

  • Time Tangled Island was originally called Time Twisted Island.
  • Time Tangled Island is updated every year as the "Lab" setting of the time machine must reflect the present year.
  • Time Tangled Island is the first Poptropica island to feature sound (when you play the Phonograph).
  • You get to travel back in time and see people from as far back as 0328 BC on this island. In Early Poptropica Island it is said that the Pilgrims, who were the first to settle in Poptropica, only settled in 1982, making this a continuity error. (or maybe since this is Earth history you travel back to, then you are not traveling back to ancient Poptropica but ancient Greece)
  • When you get out of your blimp on the sand there's a little red crab. You click on him, and he does this movement as if he's squeezing into a ball, but then he gets back to his normal position. Now, click on him several times until he explodes. Then it gathers back into the original form, so you can do it again and again.
  • Once you gave the people who climb Mount Everest the goggles, you used to be able go back to the Aztec Empire and get the goggles again. This bug was patched when the island was converted to Beta.
  • Time Tangled Island was the third Beta island, and the second to be converted from non-Beta to Beta.
  • Time Tangled Island is the first Island to feature a character whose appearance is based on the player's appearance. The character is the player's future self.
  • Professor Pendulum can be seen vacationing in the Tourist Center on Shark Tooth island

Glitches

  • Magic Goggles Glitch: After you return the climbing goggles to the correct time period, sometimes when you return to the guy who gave it to you, he will be wearing the same pair of goggles. You can collect the goggles from him using the Warrior Headdress.
  • Ad Glitch: If you go into an ad on Main Street, the Time Device still appears at the bottom left of the screen. If you click it, the year display is blank and the arrow points at the picture of Thomas Edison.
  • Viking Era Glitch: Sometimes if you complete the Viking Era, even if it saves properly, it will count the Viking Era as unfinished and you must redo it.
  • All Era Glitch: This so far has only been reported by Zany Lightning, A.K.A. Paladinluke. Same as above, but other eras will be glitched, such as Aztec and Chinese.

Written Walkthrough

Walkthrough by Slanted Fish

Welcome to Time Tangled Island, where the past is all jumbled up and it’s somehow, of course, up to you to fix it.

Talk to the scientist outside Pendulum’s Lab, then follow her inside. A Future Machine awaits! Activate it by running down to the bottom, and push the big plug into its equally big socket. Then jump up to the machine, now glowing blue, and enter.

You will appear in a dystopian world filled with flies and air pollution. Head left and you’ll find someone who looks looks eerily similar to you… wait, it is you, 50 years into the terrible future. A signpost laments what has become of the world.

Ask them (yourself?) for help in repairing the past, and you’ll be handed a Time Device to allow you to travel through time. You can use it by by clicking on the time device icon, now located at the bottom left corner of your screen.

In order to save the future, you must travel to the different time periods of the past, find the missing artifact of another time period, and then return it to the original time period. You can do this in any order. Here’s a quick look and what you need to give and get from each time period, but note that these are not the only items you’ll need to find:

  1. Mt. Everest (1953) — get Statuette of Liberty / give Goggles
  2. Statue of Liberty (1882) — get Notebook / give Statuette of Liberty
  3. The Graff House (1776) — get Salt Rocks / give Declaration of Independence
  4. Mali Empire (1387) — get Declaration of Independence / give Salt Rocks
  5. Edison’s Workshop (1877) — get Piece of Stone / give Phonograph
  6. Aztec Empire (1519) — get Goggles / give Piece of Stone
  7. Leonardo da Vinci (1516) — get Peace Medal / give Notebook
  8. Lewis & Clark Expedition (1805) — get Stone Bowl / give Peace Medal
  9. Great Wall of China (1593) — get Amulet / give Stone Bowl
  10. Vikings (831) — get Golden Vase / give Amulet
  11. Ancient Greece (328 BC) — get Phonograph / give Golden Vase

Let’s start by clicking on the icon of a man in a blue hood with black goggles (11 o’clock) — that’ll take you to Mount Everest, year 1953. Press the knob to the side, and off you’ll go!

Mount Everest, 1953

Make your way up Mount Everest by following the path. When you find the rope, keep going up, and onwards through the snow. You’ll eventually come across two hikers. One of them, Edmund Hillary, has lost his climbing goggles, so they’re stuck.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t keep going! Head up to the summit and take the Statuette of Liberty sitting in the snow. (Wait a minute, if Edmund Hillary and his sherpa pal Tenzing Norgay were the first people to reach this summit IRL, did you just break history by beating them to the top?)

Anyway, it’s really cold up here, so let’s keep moving. Click the time device again, and this time click on 10 o’clock (man with brown hair and mustache). Press the knob and here we go to 1882 AD!

Statue of Liberty, 1882

You’re now at the French site where the Statue of Liberty is being built. Go to the left and enter “Gadget, Gauthier et Cie.” Inside, on the right, you’ll meet Bartholdi, the sculptor who’s missing his study model. Tell him you have it, and this time period will be repaired!

Exit the building and jump up to the top of the construction site. There you’ll meet Gustave Eiffel, best known for designing the Eiffel Tower. Anyway, get to the tip of this top ledge and jump diagonally up left, which should land you on the ledge of the side building. If you land just right, you can grab the Notebook! If not, just try again until you can get it.

Next up, 1776 AD. Open the time device again click on 7 o’clock (man with black hat and brown pigtail).

The Graff House, 1776

Move right, careful to avoid the hedgehog. You’ll arrive in front of the big red Graff House, where Thomas Jefferson is writing the Declaration of Independence to create a new nation. But we’ll get to that later! For now, jump up the window ledges and grab the bag of Salt Rocks from the chimney.

Open up the time device again, and click on 3 o’clock (woman with white turban). Press the knob, and off we go to the year 1387.

Mali Empire (Timbuktu), 1387

Go right and past two green bushes. Find the ledge and jump up, then keep going up until you’re on top of a building with a man in a white turban. Tell him you’ve found his salt rocks, and the time period will be repaired!

Now jump down one level, careful to avoid the snake, and keep going right until you reach the Timbuktu Inn. Inside, go up and talk to the man wearing white. He’ll show you some documents he’s been trading.

Seeing your interest in a foreign document, he’ll offer it to you in exchange for a little help with a puzzle. Put together this 18-piece jigsaw of the the king Mansa Musa, and you’ll be given the Declaration of Independence!

Now let’s go back to the Graff House in 1776 AD by clicking on 7 o’clock on the time device. This time enter the house and find the man in a black hat. It’s Thomas Jefferson, and what did he miss? His draft of the Declaration of Independence! Give it to him, and the time period will be repaired.

Edison’s Workshop, 1877

Open your time device again, and click on 9 o’clock (man with brown hair). You’ll arrive in Thomas Edison’s workshop in 1887 AD.

At the far left is an old-school bike. Hop on, and click on the circle on top of the bigger wheel to make it move. When it stops, jump onto the branch above the vehicle and up again. Then hop onto the gray roof and pick up the colorful Piece of Stone sticking out of the chimney.

Aztec Empire, 1519 AD

Open up your time device again, and click on 5 o’clock (man wearing leaf headdress). This is the Aztec empire, 1519 AD.

Go right and jump over the goggled guard to avoid having him knock you over. Climb up the steps until you reach the top, and talk to the Aztec king with the big headdress. Give him the missing piece of the sun stone. The time period will be repaired! The stone, by the way, honors Tonatiuh, the Aztec deity of the sun.

Jump off the temple and head right. On the farthest building, you’ll find an elderly man who will give you his Aztec Warrior Headdress. Put it on, then head back left to the aggressive guards. With your headdress on, they won’t attack you anymore. One of them will even give you his Goggles!

You remember who was missing his goggles? Head back over to Mount Everest (11 o’clock on the time device) and talk to Edmund Hillary in the blue coat. Give him the goggles, and the time period will be repaired! You can even follow the hikers up to the peak of Everest and enjoy the view together.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Workshop, 1516

Onto saving more time periods! Open up your time device and click on 4 o’clock (man with brown hat and gray beard). That’ll take you to 1516 AD, the era of the Renaissance!

Go left and up past the waterfall. At the wooden platforms, jump up to the swing-powered platform. Ride it down until it stops, then jump left and mind the gap. When you get in front of Leo’s workshop, enter.

Inside, go to the top floor and look for a painter dressed in brown. That’s Leonardo da Vinci (Leo). Give him his notebook, and the time period will be repaired! As a reward, Leo will give you a Glider. You can wear this and it will help you sort of float in the air. Put on the glider and exit Leo’s workshop.

Go back to the wooden platforms, and below the man, you’ll see a gleaming silver medal. Wearing your new glider, glide over to the Peace Medal to grab it.

Lewis and Clark Expedition, 1805

Next up in time travel: the Lewis and Clark expedition. Open the time device and click on 8 o’clock (man with big brown hat and pigtail). The year is 1805 AD.

Go right until you find the tree. Jump to the top branch and wait for a beaver to pop up with a Stone Bowl on his head. Reach for it when it comes! By the way, the script on the bowl is “勇” (pronounced yǒng, Chinese for brave).

Jump down to ground level and go right until you find Captain Meriwether Lewis in the hat and pigtail. Give him the peace medal, and the time period will be repaired!

Great Wall of China, 1593

Open up your time device again, and click on 6 o’clock (man in gray helmet). Here in 1539 AD, the Great Wall of China is still being built. Head right and grab the barrel of Gunpowder. (Seems like a dangerous thing to leave lying around…)

Then jump up on the construction, watching out for falling bricks, and keep going up and then right to a man in fine red robes. He’ll offer you his amulet if you can beat him at a little game, which immediately commences.

You’ll be shown a layout of eight Mahjong tiles and have to recall the tile on top. Keep an eye on its location as the tiles are turned over and shuffled. (Wait, this isn’t how you play Mahjong!) Anyway, when the shuffling is over, select the tile that you think is identical to the one on top, which you’ve hopefully been following with your eyes. If you get it right, the man will give you his Amulet. If you miss, don’t worry, you can try again.

Now head left until you find the soldier patrolling the wall. Give him the stone bowl, and the time period will be repaired!

Vikings, 831

Open the time device again, and this time click on 2 o’clock (Viking man with helmet and pigtails). Tell the first Viking you see that you have the amulet, and the time period will be repaired! With the blessings of Thor and his hammer as depicted on the amulet, the Vikings are ready to set sail again.

Then head right and jump up to a cave with its entrance blocked by rocks. Click on the rocks to blow them up with your gunpowder, and enter the cave. A golden vase awaits inside, but you have to be quick!

Inside, you’ll have about 30 seconds to find the Golden Vase in the bottom left corner. At the bottom, take care not to fall into the water, or your torch will go out. Here’s a map of the cave and the route you should take (S for Start; F for Finish). (Thanks Fierce Moon!)

Viking cave

If your torch burns out, you can try again. Once you have the vase, the whole cave will light up, letting you make your way back out with ease.

By the way, there’s a bonus item on the ledge to the far right. Wearing the Glider you got from Leo da Vinci, take a running leap from the cave’s ledge to glide your way over to this small cliff to get yourself an epic Viking Suit!

Ancient Greece (Delphi), 328 B.C.

Open up your time device again, and click on 1 o’clock (soldier in full helmet with red feathers). This stop is Delphi in ancient Greece, 328 BC.

Head right and up to the building on the hill, then enter. Inside, you’ll meet the Oracle of Delphi, who says you must make a donation at the treasury in order to hear her wisdom.

Go back to where you started and tell the second soldier that you have the golden vase for the treasury. The time period will be repaired, and you can hear what else the oracle has to say! However, if you’ve reached this far into the guide, her tips are only speaking to sequences we’ve already solved.

But there’s still one more thing we must make right. There’s a misplaced item on the roof of the treasury, and to get up there, you’ll need to do some jumping. So first jump up to the roof of the oracle’s building, then onto the next roof, then the statue, and finally to the treasury roof. There, you’ll find Thomas Edison’s Phonograph.

From your inventory, you can click on the arrow sign on the phonograph item card to listen to Edison’s actual voice singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

Now go back to Edison’s Workshop, 1877 by clicking 9 o’clock on the time device. Enter the workshop and go left and up until you find Thomas Edison, who’s wearing a red vest. Tell him you have his phonograph, and the time period will be repaired!

Back to the Future

Now that all the time periods have been repaired, go back to the present by opening your time device and clicking on 12 o’clock (marked “Lab”). Enter Pendulum’s Lab, fire up the machine, and step into the future once again…

You’re back in the future, only this time, it’s looking way better! Have some fun exploring it. Once you’ve made your way through the monorail rides and beamed yourself up through their vents as well as a small hovering platform, you’ll come across a glass tube. Enter it to find your Sky Home!

In here, as well as out there, you’ll find some fascinating and environmentally friendly technology. In the top right corner, you’ll find a familiar someone — it’s you, 50 years into the prosperous future!

Your future self will give you the quest reward: the Time Tangled Island Medallion and credits to spend in the store. Well done, you’ve saved the ages!
