How to Pair Your Amazon Fire TV Stick Remote

The Amazon Fire TV Stick will turn a regular TV into a smart TV. But it won’t be so smart if your remote isn’t working. Out of the box, your remote should pair with your Fire TV Stick once you set it up. However, your remote can sometimes lose connection. Here are several ways to pair your Fire TV Stick remote manually, and how you can use your smartphone as a remote instead.

How to Pair an Amazon Fire Stick Remote

To quickly pair an Amazon Fire TV Stick remote, press and hold the home button for 10 seconds or until the light at the top of your remote starts blinking quickly. You will see an on-screen message or the light on your remote will flash blue three times when it has been paired.

How to Pair an Amazon Fire Stick Remote

If that doesn’t work, try resetting your remote by following the steps below:

How to Reset an Amazon Fire Stick Remote

To reset a Fire TV remote, unplug your Fire TV device from power for 60 seconds. Then press the left, menu, and back buttons on your remote for 12 seconds. Next, remove the batteries, plug your Fire TV device in and wait 60 seconds. Finally, insert your batteries and press the home button.

  1. Unplug your Fire Stick from the power outlet for 60 seconds.
  2. Then press and hold left, menu, and back on your remote for 12 seconds. The left directional button is the left side of the ring on your remote, the menu button has three horizontal lines, and the back button has a rounded arrow pointing to the left.

  3. Next, wait five seconds and remove the batteries from your remote. If you have another set of batteries, you might want to replace them at this point.
  4. Then plug your Fire Stick back into the power outlet and wait 60 seconds.
  5. Next, insert the batteries in your remote.
  6. Finally, push the home button on your remote. Amazon recommends you stand at least 10 feet away from your Fire TV device when you reset it.

Note: It might take a minute for your remote to pair with your Fire TV. If it still doesn’t pair after a few minutes, try holding down the home button for 10 seconds.

If you’re trying to pair a new or replacement remote, you might have to add it to your Fire Stick manually. Here’s how:

How to Pair a Replacement Remote to Your Fire TV

To pair a replacement remote for your Fire Stick, go to Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote. Then hold the home button on your new remote for 10 seconds and select the new remote’s name with your old remote to confirm.

  1. Press the home button on your Fire Stick remote.

Note: If you don’t have a Fire TV remote that works, you can also use your smartphone to add and remove remotes. Skip to the next section to find out how to use your phone as a remote and then complete the following steps to pair a new remote.

  2. Then open Settings. You can do this by pressing the right directional button on your remote until the gear icon on the right is highlighted. Then press the down directional button on your remote to open the settings menu.

Note: If you are running an old version of Fire OS, your screen might look different. If so, you can find the Settings menu by pressing the up button on your remote until you see Home highlighted. Then press the right directional button to select Settings and the down directional button to access the Settings menu. Then all the following steps will be nearly identical.

You can add up to seven remote controls to your Fire Stick. If you’ve reached your limit, you will need to unpair one of them. You can do this here by pressing the menu button with the three lines on your remote and then the select button in the middle of the ring on your remote. This might also help you reset a remote that isn’t working.

How to Use Your Phone as a Fire Stick Remote

To use your phone as a Fire Stick remote, download and install the Amazon Fire TV app. Then open the app and select your Fire TV device. Log into your Amazon account and enter the PIN that you see on the TV screen into your phone.

  1. Download and install the Amazon Fire TV app. You can find the app on the Google Play Store for Android devices and the Apple App Store for iPhones and other iOS devices. Make sure you download the app from AMZN Mobile LLC.

    Awesome!!!

Ok so know that this isn’t a perfect 5 star rating because NOTHING is perfect. Take that into account and this app update is awesome. The old swipe feature had its place but this looks more like a real remote and that’s what we’re all used to. The app is easy to pair and comes in very handy because the remotes that come with the Fire Sticks are crap. We have 3 Fire Sticks in the house (2 HD and 1 4K) and only one remote still works. It’s the remote for the 4K Fire Stick and we decided to re-pair it with the bedroom tv. The “d-pad” on the app needs to be smaller, it should be at the bottom of the screen for people with smaller hands like my wife and there needs to be more options that would be on a basic remote (like a sleep button or volume control) but overall this update to the remote app is a HUGE step in the right direction. Adding the remote listening feature, which is available for the Roku remote app (we have two Rokus as well), would be awesome too.

    Easy fix

I usually don’t do reviews but here it goes... this app has always worked great for me especially since I have lost the physical remote. But recently for about a week or so when I attempted to watch anything the app would not let go up,down, left or right I could however click on the setting button and it would immediately take me to settings but again I could not go up,down, left or right and when I clicked the home button it immediately went to the home button but I still couldn’t move around. I came on here in the reviews to see if anyone was having this issue I had attempted to unplug and re-plug the fire stick and I was still have the same issue. Today I decided to contact support through the app and selected call me, so I immediately got a call waited less than 1 minute and they actually helped me. She was able to take control of my screen and see what I was talking about she had me troubleshoot by reinstalling this app on my phone than unplugging the fire stick from my tv wait 2-3 minutes than plug it back in and to my surprise it WORKED i guess waiting before replugging helped because I had unplugged the fire stick before but not that long just like a couple seconds so yeah hope someone can find this helpful.

It’s very good, but needs improvement

This app was very useful when I lost my fire stick remote (idk how I lost it but I suspect it’s in my room), my mom mentioned it to me, and I reinstalled it. (my mom must’ve had the app previously) It took me by surprise of how good it was! I functioned just like my fire stick! (My fire stick was awesome btw ;-;) But there is two things that irritates me. And one of them is when my phone turns off automatically, it would have a little “Reconnecting” thing. This didn’t bug me much, until now. Now, if you leave the app open for a long time, the “Reconnecting” thing will be a bit long. (Not too long, but enough to annoy me) And, there is the last thing I need to complain about lol. If you leave the app for a long time, the thing I just said above is if your fast enough to come back. If you leave it for a long enough time, when you come back to the app, it shows how to connect to your fire stick TV. Now, this happens a lot, and it’s really stupid cause it takes so many taps just to be lucky and actually connect to it. Let me get straight to the point. Sometimes if I try to connect to it, (which means tap on what my TV is called) it doesn’t work. It’s like a frozen screen, but it’s not. And if I hit the wrong thing, which happens often, It would send me to “Add Devices”. Please fix this, it would be better for me.

    Works fine

I honestly have no idea what everyone was talking ab because I almost got turned away because of the reviews. I have a fire tv. If you read what it says premium is for a VPN and some other stuff. I use this to watch videos on the browser because the scroll kept messing up for me. It allows me to play the videos directly instead of wasting time on the site. Works precisely as intended as both a remote and a way to directly watch videos so 5 stars

    Fire stick

App doesn’t give enough information to inform user all that is needed to efficiently use the remote for the firestick without firetv. It should be more streamlined when it comes regarding what to do on a meta level rather than making the consumer struggle to connect each separate part to the same WiFi , all while using a remote control in app formation that had to be purchased. So j in found it to be a big disappointment due to lack of detail within the explanation or directions regarding how to use your phone as a remote. Sounds simple enough, but it is quite frustrating and I would rather not mess with it after trying for hours to set it up. as Netflix is just a phone call away with just as much or more satisfying streaming capability and is way more user friendly in my humble opinion. capabilities and pleasure without the hassle of the fire stick.

    Bad

So I just downloaded this app and when I was looking I did not want to buy anything but then whenever I downloaded this and got it all set up and when I used it anytime I click the button it would say I have to pay and it was super poor quality I feel like if this app once more people to put more ratings than I feel like they should step up their game and make it free so if you’re looking for an app for this type of stuff I do not suggest this app. But if you do wanna buy it then sure it’s fine but still I didn’t want to pay so much money just for an app that barely works and I could just spend a few extra seconds to find the remote and just click stuff and also if you use your phone it does not help because then it just takes a lot more time to get into your phone and then to the app. -Amberly
