Choosing the proper diameter of the tubing for your exhaust system is as important as selecting the right muffler. Your tubing diameter choice will affect the sound level and performance characteristics of the muffler, but keep in mind that bigger is not always better. Using tubing that is too large can actually hinder exhaust scavenging by slowing the velocity of exhaust pulses in the tubing resulting in a loss of torque. And torque is what moves the car. As a general rule, most stock to mildly modified V8 powered street applications will use 2.25” – 2.5” diameter tubing. There are many variables that need to be taken into consideration when choosing the correct tubing size for your application, such as: engine technology (flat head engines vs 60’s engines vs present day engines) cubic inch, catalytic convertors, head flow, vehicle weight, how the vehicle is driven and numerous others. Light to moderately modified street applications will generally use 2.5” and rarely some can use dual 3.00” tubing, again depending on the above named factors, sound desired etc. *We generally don’t encourage the use of dual 3” exhaust systems for just street use. If you’re like most automotive enthusiasts, the modification of your high performance street or strip vehicle begins with the removal of the stock exhaust to make way for a deeper-sounding, more powerful aftermarket exhaust system. We recently tested five of Flowmaster’s latest and most popular performance mufflers for a sound comparison on a classic 1972 Chevrolet El Camino with a Pat Musi Performance 509 cubic inch engine under the hood. Producing over 600 tire-roasting horses, this El Camino is the perfect test bed for this collection of mufflers.

The 70 Series Big Block II Muffler is a three-chamber design, which incorporates a longer case for increased volume inside the muffler and lower sound levels. This muffler employs Flowmaster’s patented Delta Flow Technology which reduces interior resonance and increased efficiency, and is aimed for use on trucks, SUV’s, RV’s, tow vehicles, and high performance street cars such as our El Camino in which a quieter tone is desired. “This is one of our mildest mufflers that fits on a wide variety of applications, and if you can fit it on your vehicle, it’s one of the big choices these days,” said Benty.
While producing a much quieter tone than the other models we tested, the 70 Series still provides much-improved sound over the stock exhaust. The interior sound levels, as advertised, are very pleasant for those that prefer interior comfort while still catching the attention of those outside the car. In our tests, the 70 Series produced an average of 82 decibels at 3000 RPM from a distance of 30 feet.

50 Series Delta Flow
The three chamber design utilizes Flowmaster’s patented Delta Flow technology along with an internal tuning chamber to reduce sound inside the vehicle. Provides the same performance and exterior tone characteristics as the two chamber, but with less interior resonance. Constructed of 16-gauge aluminized steel and fully MIG-welded for maximum durability. Per Benty, “This is a really good classic muscle car muffler. Low restriction, not a lot of noise, great sound; there are a lot of great benefits, and it fits.”
In our tests, the 50 Series Delta Flow produced slightly more interior resonance than the 70 Series, while maintaining a comfortable level of sound for long commutes or weekend trips. The 50 Series Delta Flow produces a very distinctive, throaty sound at higher RPM, much as one would expect from a Flowmaster muffler.

The Super 44 Series mufflers utilize Delta Flow Technology that delivers a strong, powerful tone, which the company boasts as the most aggressive, deepest sounding, highest-performing four-inch muffler that they’ve ever constructed. In addition to the sound, the Super 44 is designed for maximum durability; MIG-welded with 16-gauge aluminized steel or 409S stainless. The unit is 4 inches thick, 9.5 inches wide, and 13 inches long, with inlet sizes ranging from 2 to 3 inches to fit a myriad of late model and classic high performance and street automobiles.
Of the street mufflers that we tested, the Super 44 produced the highest interior and exterior tone for an experience to be enjoyed both inside and out that will surely catch the attention of anyone within earshot and provide the perfect addition to showcase the horsepower lurking under the hood.

The Super 40 Series shares the same Delta Flow Technology as the Super 44, and was developed from Flowmaster’s Top Ten race muffler lineup for street and strip automobiles. The Super 40 is designed with a large, black case, limiting resonance while maintaining the exterior tone that the company is famous for. This muffler provides optimum performance for higher horsepower vehicles. “The Super 44 and the 40 are both aggressive-style mufflers with aggressive sound – more of a ‘race technology’ type of muffler. And they both fit a wide variety of different vehicles,” said Benty.
On our El Camino, the Super 40 emitted a mellow but deep tone at idle, while reaching to a throaty and aggressive tone at higher RPM. Inside, this muffler provided a great balance between sound and comfort, again with a mellow but distinctive sound.
The Super 40 is one Flowmaster’s best-selling mufflers, and for good reason.

The most aggressive muffler in Flowmaster’s lineup and its newest, the Super 10 is aimed at (and best suited for) racing applications. “This muffler comes with all the benefits of race breeding, and is also very race-oriented. We say it’s an off road muffler, but what you use it for is up to your imagination,” explained Benty.
The Super 10 is engineered with the patented Delta Flow Technology found in the Super 40 and 44 Series mufflers, designed as a short, very small single chamber muffler constructed using 409S stainless steel for durability that is as close to an open pipe exhaust as one can get. The Super 10 is available in a variety of inlet/outlet combinations for different racing applications.
The Super 10 Series, as expected, produced the loudest, most aggressive sound levels both inside and out of the car. And while the volume levels were similar to that of open exhaust, the Super 10 series muffler provided the distinct Flowmaster tone.
Benty continued, “We’ve been trying to direct people to a more off road environment with that [Super 10], but one the things we hear is that they want a very, very aggressive muffler… You got it!”

Let’s first look at the main differences between the Super 40 and Super 44.
Main Differences Between Flowmaster Super 40 vs Super 44
The main differences between the Flowmaster Super 40 vs Super 44 are:
- The Super 40 is made from aluminized steel, whereas the Super 44 is made from stainless steel.
- The Super 40 has a thicker case, whereas the Super 44 has a thinner case.
- The Super 40 has a wider design, whereas the Super 44 has a more compact design which allows it to fit on more vehicles.

Exploring Flowmaster Super 40 and Super 44 Features
The Flowmaster Super 44 is a newer and upgraded version of the Super 40. Let’s look at some of the key features of these mufflers.
This is pretty much the main reason why you have a muffler on your exhaust system – to regulate the sound that it makes. They are both designed to help produce a more aggressive noise from your vehicle.
The original Super 40 was what really propelled Flowmaster into the mainstream. This muffler produces a real, classic muscle car noise which is mainly down to its thicker case. If you want something that has a deep and powerful sound, the Super 40 has been providing this for years.
It does produce a certain amount of noise inside the cabin of your vehicle. Even though it comes with ‘Delta Flow technology’ which is designed to keep noise outside, there is still a fairly high amount of interior resonance – we’ll have a look at this in more detail below.
The Flowmaster Super 44 is the newer and upgraded version – as we’ll find out with its more compact design.
When it comes to the noise levels, there is a bit of a difference with the Super 44. While the Super 40 is generally seen as being louder – although not as loud as some other mufflers – the Super 44 has a more aggressive bite to its noise. Really the main difference is that the Super 44 produces a deeper sound although there is some internal resonance too.
Mufflers, in general, tend to restrict the performance of your vehicle to an extent. While it won’t be a massive decrease, it can still be noticeable. If you are upgrading the muffler on your vehicle, you are essentially getting a louder noise at the expense of a bit of performance.
So, what about the Flowmaster Super 40 and Super 44?
The Flowmaster Super 40 does impact a bit on the overall power of your vehicle. There is a bit of an increase in horsepower but this will decrease the low-end power. It isn’t enough for you to ditch the Super 40 as soon as you put it on but it is something to be wary about.
The same can be said for the Super 44. Again, its primary function is noise regulation and you will perhaps get a slight horsepower performance boost. That being said, there isn’t a massively noticeable difference in performance with the Super 44. Much like the Flowmaster Super 40, its results are very much focused on noise levels.
Delta Flow Technology
We did touch on this above but it is worth expanding on in more detail. A common feature of the Flowmaster Super 40 and Super 44 is that they come with something called Delta Flow Technology.
This is designed with precision deflectors in the two chambers which are supposed to keep the sound mainly outside of your vehicle.
Without this design, the noise inside your vehicle would more than likely be a lot louder on both the Super 40 and the Super 44. It does work to an extent to keep the interior resonance down but it is still there.
It won’t completely drown out your stereo system and many people do actually like the inside noise as much as producing exterior decibels.
Upgrading any part of your engine and exhaust system can be a bit tricky when it comes to installation.
If you aren’t massively experienced with auto mechanics, you will probably be better taking either the Flowmaster Super 40 or Super 44 to someone who knows what they are doing.
Neither of these mufflers is incredibly difficult to install but if you are inexperienced it is a better idea to take it to a mechanic.
That being said, if you are determined to upgrade your muffler yourself, it doesn’t take any particular special tools to do it. If you have a tool kit at home you will more than likely have what you need to put on either the Super 40 or Super 44. Compared to some other mufflers – like the MagnaFlow muffler (also covered in our alternatives section further below) – both of these mufflers are quite straightforward to install. If you are in any doubts take it to someone who knows what they are doing.
Features unique to Flowmaster Super 40
The Flowmaster Super 40 is the previous version of the Super 44 and there are some features that are unique to this model. One is that it is made from aluminized steel – the Super 44 is made from stainless steel.
This gives it corrosion resistance and is designed to increase durability. Aluminized steel is a pretty common material for mufflers to be crafted from. Although, there has been a big shift to stainless steel construction as it does offer more durability and longevity.
The case is thicker on the Super 40 as well. Having a thicker case allows the sound to echo the noise that comes from a real muscle car. This can be detrimental to fitting it onto your vehicle especially if you don’t have much room to install a new muffler.
Features unique to Flowmaster Super 44
One of the main features that are unique to the Super 44 when compared to the Super 40 is that it is made from stainless steel.
This upgraded version of the original Super 40 will have more durability due to its construction. Stainless steel won’t rust so you will get added durability with the Super 44 model. This is backed up with a lifetime warranty as well which you won’t get on the Super 40.
Another unique feature is that the Super 44 muffler is that it is smaller and more compact. The size has been reduced from the Super 40 so that it can fit a wider variety of vehicles.
Comparing Flowmaster Super 40 and Super 44 Pricing
There really isn’t a big difference in the cost of the Super 40 and the Super 44 across the board.
This is a bit surprising given the Super 44 is designed as an upgrade. That being said, the original Super 40 still has a very loyal following especially for people who want a sound similar to the original Flowmaster 40.
The actual cost of both the Super 40 and the Super 44 isn’t huge and the sound enhancement is actually well worth the money.

Are there any alternatives?
MagnaFlow Performance Muffler
The MagnaFlow Performance Muffler is an ideal part if you have a smaller vehicle.
Its design is well suited to cars such as Hyundais and Mitsubishis and it can fit onto a wide range of different vehicles.
The MagnaFlow Performance Muffler has a really nice aesthetic to it as well. It has a wide design and is also made from stainless steel so it has added durability too.
In terms of the sound, his muffler will greatly enhance the noise your car makes. It offers a deep rumbling sound which can help massively with creating more noise, especially on smaller vehicles.
It doesn’t offer great installation instructions. This is one downside especially if you are intending on fitting this part yourself. If you are taking it to a garage then no big deal but it is something to be wary of.
Overall we really quite like the MagnaFlow Performance Muffler – we included it on our list of best mufflers previously. It has a great design, nice sound, and is reasonably priced as well.
Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler
The Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler is available for a range of different vehicles and it has a few great features which will help boost your sound levels.
Not only does it help to create a deep sound that will be louder than your stock muffler, but it has features to enhance performance too.
This includes large flow tubes which help to improve exhaust flow and reduce backpressure. There is also technology that helps to prevent turbulence. The fiberglass matting technology is there to reduce the likelihood of interior resonance when driving.
The Dynomax Super Turbo certainly isn’t the loudest Muffler you’ll find on the market but it doesn’t claim to be either. What it does is create a deep sound that will be louder than your OEM part. It isn’t going to annoy the neighbors but it will enhance the noise your vehicle makes.
You get a limited lifetime warranty with this muffler.
If you want a muffler that won’t break unwanted decibel levels but does perform very well, this is a decent alternative to both the Flowmaster Super 40 v Super 44.
Answer: Yes. If you still have a stock muffler installed, you should hear a noticeable difference in the sounds your vehicle makes. These aren’t the loudest mufflers available but they will improve the noise of your vehicle.
Answer: Not really. If you have some experience with mechanics you should be able to install the Super 40 or Super 44. If you aren’t sure how to do this it is best to take it to a mechanic.
Answer: You might do. Their main purpose is to imporove the sound that your vehicle makes, however, you may get a boost in horsepower. This can sometimes come at the expensve of low-end power.

Answer: California has stricter laws on custom mufflers. They are illegal if the noise being emitted from the muffler is over 95 decibels although on the spot fines have been stopped. They may also be illegal if they produce too many emissions. You should check your state laws first before making a purchase and equipping a new muffler to your vehicle.
Flowmaster Super 40 v Super 44 – go with the Super 44 if you want a deeper sound
Both of these mufflers from Flowmaster will improve the noise that your vehicle makes without causing too much attention. If you want a muffler that is going to enhance the sound of your vehicle but isn’t going to have everyone’s heads turning, either of these is ideal.
But we do need to choose one.
We are going to go with the Super 44 not least because we feel that it offers a deeper sound as well as some other features. The Super 40 is a classic and still offers a resonating sound like the original Flowmaster 40 muffler however we think that the Super 44 just edges it.
Even though the sound is a little deeper and more aggressive, there are other things we prefer with the Super 44 too.
One is the stainless steel construction which should give it more longevity than the Super 40. You also get a limited lifetime warranty with the Super 44 too. It has a more compact design so should be able to fit into a variety of vehicles as well.
Installation of both of these mufflers is relatively straightforward if you know what you are doing. There isn’t anything massively difficult about getting it onto your vehicle although the Super 44 is a bit more compact.
The Super 44 also comes with the Delta Flow Technology although some internal resonance remains. The Super 44 isn’t the loudest muffler out there but doesn’t really claim to be either.
If you are in the market to improve the noise your vehicle makes and want a durable and modern muffler from a leading brand, it is difficult to go wrong with the Flowmaster Super 44.

UNDERSTANDING WHAT A MUFFLER IS
If one has to describe a sophisticated automotive technology in simple terms, then we need to clarify what a muffler does by definition. A muffler is a part of an exhaust system that minimizes the noise that your engine produces, while reducing backpressure for a more powerful wave and improved performance. The more the backpressure, the less effective your engine is.
A Flowmaster muffler uses a combination of chambers, perforated tubes, and special sound reducing technology to deliver a deep, satisfying exhaust sound, while decreasing backpressure. The result is an instantaneous horsepower increase, faster acceleration, and better fuel mileage.
Most exhaust system mufflers feature an inlet and an outer valve, a housing for the valves, and a resonant chamber. The muffler of your vehicle is connected directly to the exhaust pipe and to the tail pipe. Cars have their mufflers installed lengthwise under the vehicle in order to guide the exhaust flow backward at the rear or to the section located before the rear wheels.

40 Series Mufflers
Deep powerful sound outside of the vehicle, interior
resonance in most all applications at different
Generally used on early and late-model street/strip
vehicles with or without catalytic converters seeking
a more aggressive tone. An H-Pipe is strongly
recommended in all dual exhaust systems.
50 Series Mufflers
Mellow yet powerful sound in most applications.
Quieter than 40 Series mufflers outside. A special
"Tuning Chamber" helps reduce interior resonance
at most driving speeds.
Most all street/strip applications with or without
catalytic converters. Off-Road/Race applications.
An H-Pipe is strongly recommended in all dual
30 Series Mufflers
Mellow yet powerful tone. The sound level is a little
quieter than the "50 Series" outside of the vehicle,
but with more of that "original Flowmaster sound."
The combination of added case volume and the
unique "volume chamber" creates a larger low
pressure area behind the chamber than a "50
Series" muffler. This leads to better scavenging of
exhaust gases, and a sound that is exclusive to the
"30 Series" muffler.
For use on all high performance street/strip
applications. Use on Late Model Trucks with single
exhaust and catalytic converters that prefer more
tone, or trucks with dual exhaust. An H-Pipe is
strongly recommended in all dual exhaust systems.
Big Block Series Mufflers
Mellow tone. Increased volume of case size and a
specially developed "Tuning Chamber" makes this
the quietest muffles in the Flowmaster Line, both
inside the vehicle, and outside the vehicle.
For use on all high performance street vehicles,
Chevy/GMC Suburbans, Tahoes, Yukons, trucks
used as tow vehicles, and most all Motorhome/R.V.
applications. An H-Pipe is strongly recommended
in all dual exhaust systems.
