Introduction: Replacing a Tailgate on a Ford F

A while back I let my wife use my truck to drive to Iowa to get some used baby furniture from a friend. I sent her with some tie down straps, tarps and bungee cords to tie down and cover the furniture on the 6 hour drive home. Needless to say, one of the bungee cords that was attached to the tarp came loose on her way home and beat the tar out of my tailgate while flapping in the wind.

Step 1: Overview

I took my truck to two different body shops to have the tailgate repainted and the cheapest quote was $ I'm not joking, $ Someone at work mentioned I should check the junk yards. Since I'm a huge fan of junk yards, I was in. I checked 2 local junkyards and only found one tailgate that would fit my truck, but it was dented and wouldn't really work.

I finally found a body shop 3 -4 hours away on eBay. I bought a brand new tailgate painted with factory color for $ shipped. I estimated it would take about 1 hour to do the swap. I'd trade an hour of my time any day to save $

Step 2: Materials and Tools

Tools
1)  Torx Bits
2)  Ratchet
3)  various sockets
4)  Flathead screwdriver
4)  needle nose pliers

Parts & Materials
1)  new tailgate
2)  3M emblem adhesive

Step 3: Removie the Old Tailgate

The firs step is to remove the old tailgate. This is fairly easy, remove the torx bolts on each side of the tailgate. This bolt is the one that holds the retaining cable. Be sure you have the tailgate propped up before removing these all the way.

Once these bolts are removed you can set the tailgate at about 45 degrees and the passengers side should slide out of it's connector at this angle. The drives side connection was slide away sideways

Step 4: Transfering the Needed Parts From Old Tailgate to New

The new tailgate shipped an empty hull, so I needed to transfer the following items over to the new one.

1)  Inside lock cover plate
2)  Tailgate handle & locking mechanism
3) The two latches on each side that keep the tailgate closed and locked
4)  Connection bushings
5)  F and Ford emblems

Step 5: Removing the Lock Cover Plate

The first thing to remove is the lock cover plate. It's held in place by 8 Torx screws. Pretty straight forward. After this is removed you should see the lock mechanism and latches.

Step 6: Removing the Locking Mechanism

Before the lock mechanism can be remove, you'll need to unsnap the two connectors holding the actuator rods in place.

The lock mechanism is held in place by two bolts, very easy and simple to remove.

Step 7: Removing the Two Retaining Clips on the Actuator Rods

There are two black clips that hold the actuator rods to the tail gate. Gently squeeze the tip of the clip with a pair of needle nosed pliers and push the clip down to remove.

Step 8: Removing the Two Latches

The latches are held in place by two Torx bolts on the side of the tailgate. One of these bolts you have already removed when you removed the tailgate. Remove the other bolt and slip out the latch it should be connected to the actuator rod. Repeat this step on the other side.

Step 9: Remove the Black Plastic Bushings

Remove the two black plastic bushings from the connectors.

Step Removing the Emblems

Since my old tailgate was already beat-up and scratched, I used a screwdriver to pry up the emblems. The method is easy, but it WILL scratch up your tailgate.

Step Replace the Latches in the New Tailgate First

Only put the last bolt you took out in to hold the latch in place for now. You'll be snugging them up once you get the tailgate put back on the truck.

Step Add the Locking Mechanism

Slide the handle side into the front of the tailgate and late it on the ground. Slide the back plate over the two bolts and hand tighten the nuts on the bolts. Be sure to leave room to manipulate the actuator rods into place in their clips.

Reconnect the rods into their respective connector clips and latch them down. The small black retaining clips should still be attached to the rods, slide them towards the hole for the clip and snap it into place. Now is the time to completely tighten the two nuts that hold the locking mechanism in place.

Add the bushings on the main connectors to get ready to replace the tailgate on the truck.

Step Replacing the Tailgate

Slide the drivers side on first until it is in place. Set the tailgate at a 45 degree angle and then slide the passengers side on. While holding the tailgate at this angle, replace the Torx bolt that is connected to the retaining cable. Us this time to completely tighten both Torx bolts that hold the latch in place. Repeat this step on the other side.

Step Replacing the Lock Cover Plate

With the tailgate completely open, place the cover into it's place. Tighten all 8 screws down so it doesn't rattle.

Step Adding the Emblems

Apply a thin layer of the 3M glue to the back of each emblem and line up the holes with the knobs on the back of them emblem. Press the emblem into place and hold it there for atleast a minute. It should be fully cured in 24 hours.

Step In Closing

The whole project actually on took 45 minutes and was easy that I expected. Not a bad way to save $

How to Replace Ford Emblem on F Tailgate?

Here are 6 easy DIY methods to remove and add a new emblem on Ford trucks. You can do this at home, and it only takes a few minutes.

How to Replace Ford Emblem on F Tailgate? You can replace the emblem on F by removing the adhesive substance with a heat gun, mark the area, install a new adhesive emblem, and secure it with fender badges.

This logo is available in different sizes and materials. The ford logo badges are also mounted on the vehicle.

The emblems are called logos, and Ford has a unique oval-shaped logo with blue and white colors. The word Ford is written in blue color.

Remove adhesive emblem

In most cases, the adhesive logo is fastened to the side doors of the pickup. These plastic logos get worn out due to scratches and also become dull with time.

Before removing it, you should have a heat gun to apply some heat to it. You can also use a hairdryer for this purpose.

The heat is required to loosen the grip of it on the vehicle. Heat can quickly melt the adhesive gum on the inner side of it.

Blow the hot air gently o it. Keep blowing the air until it loses its grip. When it is free, then remove it by pulling away from one side.

Another simple trick is to use some flat head tool to tear it. You can use any thin wire or dental floss to do it.

Both can easily pass through the bond between the surface and the badge. Try to run it by moving the wire back and forth. When the adhesive paper leaves its side, pull it away with your hands.

Remove pin fastened emblem

The tailgate and guard grill have fender badges as their logos. Removing them is a technical job.

You will need a screwdriver compatible with the size of the fasteners to remove it. These logos are fastened to the automobile through pins inserted inside the body.

Properly check the type of fasteners holding the badge. Make your hands secure by wearing safety gloves and a jacket.

To remove it, you should have access o the interior of the body. Remove the grill and expose the screws and bolts of it.

Then unscrew all the bolts from their place. Usually, it is held at its place by 2 to 3 bolts. Open all of them one by one.

After this, remove the badge with your hands. When clips are holding it, then open them by moving them to the opposite side. It will lose its grip, and you can easily remove it. You can also use this technique to add a new front turn signal bulb in your pickup.

Purchase new emblem

First, you should purchase a high-quality logo. Different auto repair shops sell them. You can buy them at affordable prices. Buy those which are compatible with the size and weight of the previous one.

An average product weighs ounces, and its length is 9 inches. Both adhesive and clip badges have the same size.

Always weigh and measure the length of it before buying. The fender badges come in a variety of colors like silver and black. Choose the color according to vehicle color.

You need to buy one for a tailgate, one for the grill, and two adhesive logos for drive doors. These are common places where these are attached to your vehicle.

The cost of then lies between $50 to $ This depends upon the size and material used in their manufacturing. Add a toolbox in the truck bed and store all the accessories in it.

Mark the area

Marking is essential to specify the area where we will fix it. Before marking, you should clean the surface.

Some glue is usually left on the surface when you remove the adhesive substance.

You should use any glue remover to remove it.

First, scratch the excess glue with a knife. Then apply a cleaning agent and wipe it with water. You can also use spirit to get rid of stubborn glue.

Then take a dark marker to mark the area. Make prominent dots on the points where it will attach. In the case of the badge, the hole of screws is already present at the site.

Sometimes the paint of the surface gets stick to the adhesive paper. You can also apply a thin layer of paint to it. It will work as a barrier to prevent corrosion.

Install new F Emblem

Its installation is an easy task. First, take it and remove dirt from its surface. Then tear a small portion of adhesive back paper from it.

Then place it on the marked area carefully. Place it properly so that the edges meet the marked location. You can also apply some extra glue on the surface to stick it in place.

When this portion has fully adhered to the surface, then tear all the paper from it. Then attach the remaining side to the area.

Rub it with your hands to entirely stick to it on the vehicle. You can use any spatula to smooth its surface.

Keep in mind during this step; no air bubble should entrap behind the logo. It can decrease the aesthetic appearance of it, it can get small folds due to air. Remove plastic lamination from it after pressing it on the surface.

Install Fender Badges

It contains two to three pins on the backside, and you can firmly press it after inserting the pins in the holes present at the side.

Place it on a marked area and fit it, applying pressure on it. In the case of screws, you will need bolts and a screwdriver.

Place it on the surface and screw in all the bolts to fix it there. Tighten the nuts of bolts carefully so that they will not lose their grip. When the clips are present, turn the gripping side of the pins to hold them in place.

Procedures

I used mm iron wire, moving it back and forth to remove the standard F badge.

Photo showing removal of stock badge. Use fishing wire to cut through the foam backing

The trickiest part is to get past the pin in the upper left corner. I pulled the badge towards me, used a knife to cut right beside the pin and inserted another wire. After that, it's a piece of cake. Just move the wire back and forth to the right side and the badge will come off easily.

The tailgate after the badge is removed. Some sticky material remains

What's the use of the third hole in the middle, the badge only uses 2 of them?

Pull the sticky substance off. It should come off fairly easily

I never expected, the leftovers would come off that easily. Just take your time and pull slowly, it will come off nicely.

Finally, I used white spirit to remove the remaining glue and spirit to degrease.

Clean the area with rubbing alcohol to remove any leftover grease, wax, or glue

Done. After you have inserted the pins of the badge into the holes, make sure the badge is horizontal when you stick it to the tailgate. It is possible to slightly move or rotate the badge.

The job is complete. You can see the new badge
