Lee Jin-wook

South Korean actor

In this Korean name, the family name is Lee.

Lee Jin-wook (born September 16, 1981) is a South Korean actor. He is best known for his leading role in the romance series Glass Castle, the time-traveling series Nine (2013), romance series The Time We Were Not in Love and I Need Romance 2012, crime thriller series Voice (seasons 2–3), a Netflix apocalyptic horror series Sweet Home and a supporting role in the comedy film Miss Granny.

Career[edit]

2000–2007 : Education and career beginnings[edit]

Lee Jin-wook was studying Environmental Engineering at Cheongju University when he dropped out to pursue acting. He began his entertainment career as a model to some commercial and movie such as General Hospital The Movie : A Thousand Days until Once Upon a Time in High School with Kwon Sang-woo, Ahn Nae-sang, Joo Jin-mo, and Seo Dong-won.[2][3] Lee began his acting in television from TV Movie Bad Girl and roles in some television dramas such as Resurrection (South Korean TV series) with Ahn Nae-sang,[4] a good-natured stalker in Alone in Love,[5] a baseball player in Smile Again,[6] and a private investigator in Someday.[7] In 2006, Lee also play in A Dirty Carnival.

2007-2009 : Rising success[edit]

Lee became a Hallyu star when he portrayed an Incheon Airport employee in Air City,[8] and when he dated Choi Ji-woo after she broke up with Kwon Sang-woo. Lee also played a plastic surgeon in Before and After,[9] the president's son in Formidable Rivals,[10] a newly married chaebol in Glass Castle,[11] and had a cameo in The Road Home (South Korean TV series).

2009–2011 : Military enlistment and discharge[edit]

Lee then served his two-year mandatory military service from May 6, 2009 to March 7, 2011 at the Defense Media Agency of the Ministry of National Defense.[12][13][14]

2011–2013 : Comeback & break up with Choi Ji-woo[edit]

Lee came back. But, Lee broke up with Choi Ji-woo.[15] After the break up, in his comeback playing project, Myung-wol the Spy, he played a North Korean agent.[16][17] After playing the heroine's on-and-off boyfriend in I Need Romance 2012,[18] Lee starred in his most high-profile role yet as a TV anchor in the time-traveling romance Nine.[19][20]

2013–2016 : Rising success again, change agency contract, & comeback playing film[edit]

After starring in Nine, Lee mentioned contacted some agencies such as SM Entertainment which houses Jang Dong Gun and Kim Ha Neul until Will Entertainment which houses Ryu Soo Young and Lee Bo Young, and there was even a photo shoot of Lee in his agency.[21][22] But, it is almost that Lee will not change agencies. The positive reception he gained from Nine led to his being cast in a supporting role in the comedy film Miss Granny,[23] after 7 years break playing in film A Dirty Carnival with Jo In-sung and followed by his first major big-screen role in The Target, a remake of French action movie Point Blank.[24] After that, Lee then reteamed with the writer and director of Nine in The Three Musketeers (2014), a period drama set during the Joseon era where he played Crown Prince Sohyeon.[25][26] He starred in two films in 2015, the romance comedy The Beauty Inside[27] and the time travel-romance-crime Time Renegade.[28] He then returned to the small screen in Taiwanese dramaIn Time with You titled The Time We Were Not in Love.[29] In 2016, Lee starred in the crime, Goodbye Mr. Black, based on the manga of the same name.[30]

2017–present: Transition in leading roles and reinvention[edit]

In 2017, Lee was cast in three films; indie films A Tiger in Winter and Road to Utah;[31][32] and romance thriller High Society.[33]

In 2018, Lee returned to the small screen with crime dramas Return,[34] and Voice.[35][36][37]

In 2020, Lee will appear on Netflix original series Sweet Home,[38] a webtoon-based drama about a secluded teen who lives cooped up in his room, scarred from memories of school violence, and experiences creepy events after moving to an apartment following the loss of his family. It premieres on Netflix Korea on 18 December 2020.[39]

On 17 March 2021, tvN has released the full main casts for new drama, Bulgasal.[40] Lee Jin Wook plays as Dan Hwal, a bulgasal who used to be human 600 years ago. He turns into a bulgasal during the Joseon dynasty while working as a military official and completing a mission to erase the remnants of the previous dynasty. “Bulgasal” is a fantasy drama that revolves around two characters. The first is a woman who has gone through several reincarnations over the course of 600 years and remembers all of her past lives, and the second is a man who has lived for over 600 years as a bulgasal—a mythical creature that feeds off human blood and is cursed with immortality.[41] This drama is scheduled to air in second half of 2021.[42]

On 22 April 2021, CJ ENM and TVing has been revealed a full cast for a new film with title, “Happy New Year”.[43] Lee will play as a plastic surgeon who always appears at hotel’s lounge every Saturday night to wait for his destiny. “Happy New Year”(literal title) is about centers around the people who come to Hotel Emrose, each with stories of their own, and build new relationships.[44] Happy New Year” will be helmed by director Kwak Jae-yong of “My Sassy Girl,” and “The Classic” and produced by Hive Media Corp. of “Inside Men,” “The Man Standing Next,” and “Deliver Us from Evil.” Filming began on April 19, and the movie will be released both in theaters and through TVing.
