Listen to unlimited audiobooks

Listen to unlimited audiobooks DEFAULT
The new Audiobooks.com app, shown here for Android (but also available for iOS), lets you download up to two books for offline listening.

If you spend a lot of time in the car, you know what an awesome companion audiobooks can be.

A pricey one, too. A single "book on tape" (OK, CD) might run you $20, $30, even as much as $50.

That's why I'm a big fan of Audiobooks.com, which offers unlimited listening for a flat monthly rate. Just one problem: it's a hassle to use on your smartphone. Although you can access the service via your phone's mobile browser, you need a decent Internet connection to stream the audio -- and the browser interface isn't exactly ideal.

Update:Audiobooks.com recently canceled it's all-you-can-hear plan, and now offers more traditional subscription options.

Thankfully, there's now an app for that. The new Audiobooks.com app (Android|iOS) not only provides a better interface for navigating the book library and controlling playback, but also lets you download up to two books at a time for offline listening.

In case you're unfamiliar with it, Audiobooks.com is kind of like Netflix Instant Watch for audiobooks, offering all the books you can eat hear for $24.95 monthly.

The service has some 10,000 titles, including popular stuff like "The Hunger Games" and Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs bio. However, I do find it a bit lacking in new releases. If you're looking for, say, Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl" or Deborah Harkness' "Shadow of Night," you won't find them here.

Still, there's more than enough worthwhile listening here for even the most hard-core commuter. And thanks to the app, you can download two books in advance so you needn't worry about Internet availability -- or streaming your way past your data limit.

The app makes it easy to browse the Audiobooks.com catalog, which is divided into Featured and Genre sections. You can save any book to your My Books collection, essentially building a playlist for later listening.

However, I found the iOS version a bit confusing in places. For starters, you apparently have to listen to a 3-minute sample of a book before it actually begins downloading. And I could find no indication of a book's overall download progress (although there is a Download History area that does show completed downloads).

Update:There is indeed a download indicator (in the form of a bar across the bottom of the now-playing screen) that for some reason didn't appear when I first started using the app. But now it's there, and it solves my one key complaint with the app. Nice!

But those are minor gripes. Audiobooks.com is an almost unbeatable deal for folks who listen to a lot of books, and the apps greatly improve the experience of listening to them on the run.

Audiobook Service Rating Guide

When we rated each audiobook service we took into account five key metrics, which you can see below. We believe that the best audiobook services should at least reach an 8 out of 10 on these standard criteria.

  • Number of titles – Simply the more titles offered the higher the rating
  • Ease of use – We assessed both the best audiobook websites and their apps. How easy it was to locate and purchase top titles. How simple to get in touch with the support team, as well as how easy to cancel your membership, should you need to.
  • App – Is the app well designed, streamlined for users. Can you browse in-app, and furthermore purchase new apps whilst in the audiobook app
  • Affordability – Monthly price and what that entitles you to
  • Help & Support – Customer support hours, number of avenues available to get in touch

So there you have the main metrics that we used to review each audiobook service. When it comes to the overall score we judged that on these key points and our overall satisfaction after using the product for a lengthy amount of time. If we weren’t satisfied then we wouldn’t have added them to the best audiobook services list.

Best Audiobook Services

Our winner of the best audiobook service 2021

After reviewing all of the top audiobook services we came to the conclusion that Audible is the best audiobook service in 2021!

They now stock over 450,000 titles, offer 4 separate membership options and are constantly adding exclusive titles to their store.

Their cheapest audiobook membership will cost you £7.99/$14.95 per month, which is definitely worth it if you want access to their amazing service.

That doesn’t mean that the others won’t be a great fit for you. Audiobooks.com is the same price just with less titles offered. Also, if you want your audiobook subscription to offer you an unlimited listening service then we recommend going with Scribd.

Audible

Which audiobook service has the best app?

As you can see one of the key metrics that we rated of these services was how good is their audiobook app. We think that it is also one of the most important deciding factors.

Listening whilst you are on-the-go is what we love most about audiobooks. Therefore the audiobook service needs to have a high-quality, user-friendly app.

That is exactly what Audiobooks.com offers, for us, they have best audiobook app. Read our full review or sign-up here for their 30-days free trial.

Best Audiobook Services

Audiobooks.com

Audiobooks.com has a wide range of titles on offer. Their app is simple to use, you can even purchase new audiobooks from within it. Being able to buy extra credits for the same monthly cost is a great addition. Enjoy 30-days for free when you sign-up!

Which are the cheapest audiobook services?

When you are picking an audiobook service your first concern is probably going to be the price. We feel that all of the audiobook memberships reviewed here are affordable. Getting the most value for your money is definitely important though. If you are looking for the cheapest audiobook service on the market you are looking for Scribd. This is an all you can listen to type of subscription that costs just $8.99 per month.

However, if you want to keep your audiobooks in case you are going to cancel your membership at some point, then the cheapest service would be Kobo audiobooks. Their service costs £6.99 per month for 1 credit. An additional 3 credits can also be purchased at any time for £19.99.

You can try both of these free for 30 days when signing up for an account.

Scribd

Scribd allows you to listen to as much as you want for the cheapest price on the market. No credits needed. Included in the membership are ebooks too. See if Scribd is the right choice for you with their 30-days free subscription!

Different types of audiobook subscriptions

The best audiobook subscriptions allow you to buy audiobooks directly from their stores. However, this would mean that you are paying full price for a title. Luckily these audiobook services have different monthly memberships that enable their customers to enjoy audiobooks for much less. We have detailed below, how these different audiobook subscriptions work and which services use which system.

Unlimited audiobook subscriptions

Unlimited audiobook subscriptions are quite self-explanatory. Just like Netflix, the audiobook services that offer this system allows you to listen to as many audiobooks as you like throughout the month. Obviously, this membership option doesn’t allow you to keep the audiobooks should you decide to cancel at any point.

Scribd, Playster, Hibooks and BookBeat UK are the main audiobook services that offer unlimited audiobook subscriptions.

Scribd’s price is set at $9.99 per month, whilst Playster is slightly more expensive at £/$14.95 per month. Out of the two Playster does have a bigger store offering, but Scribd are quickly catching up.

You can try them both for free for 30-days, and then make up your mind about which is the best unlimited audiobook subscription on the market.

Scribd

Scribd offers audiobooks, ebooks, documents and articles for one set monthly price. All of their media is offered in an unlimited use subscription service.

For just $9.99 per month, you can listen to as many audiobooks as you like. If you are the type of person that gets through one audiobook per week then we suggest you try Scribd.

Their audiobook store isn’t as large as Audible, however, you will always find something to listen to. They offer fewer titles, but your money goes further for the number books and audiobooks you can consume.

You can see if you enjoy their unlimited audiobook subscription for free for 30-days. All you have to do is click here to register an account.

BookBeat (UK only)

Our next favourite audiobook service that offers unlimited listening is BookBeat.co.uk. Their mobile app and website are both clean and simple to use. On top of that, they offer you a 14-day free trial, you can test it for yourself by clicking here.

It’s important to note that BookBeat don’t currently offer their service to consumers in the United States or Canada. If you’re reading from any of these countries we recommend that you use Scribd for your unlimited listening.

Playster

Playster is another service that we took a look at that offers unlimited audiobooks. They have priced themselves higher than other audiobook services at £14.95 a month. But, to be fair they do offer more audiobooks when compared to Scribd.

We suggest that you use the Playster free trial before going ahead with their full service. By doing that you can see if you will be a regular user, if not maybe a credit based subscription service, like Audible, is better suited.

To get free audiobooks for a month from Playster just click on the button below.

Hibooks

Hibooks is a new audiobook app that offers unlimited audiobooks for a set monthly price of $9.99. You can only listen through the hibooks iOS mobile app, so this service isn’t for people that also enjoy listening on their computer.

Feel free to download the app and explore their offered titles before registering. Also note that you get 3 days free listening when you register, this isn’t as generous as Scribd or Playster.

Credit-based audiobook system

The next subscription system that we will talk about is the monthly credit based audiobook membership. This is arguably the most popular method out of the three as people like to keep the audiobooks that they buy. The way it works is that you will pay a monthly fee and receive 1 or 2 credits per month, depending on your chosen package. You can then redeem these credits for audiobooks of your choice.

Audible, Audiobooks.com, Kobo Audiobooks, and Downpour all use this system. The monthly subscription prices range from £6.99 to £10 per month. Kobo is the cheapest per month followed by Audible and Audiobooks.com.

Amazon's Audible

Audible is our number 1 audiobook subscription service on the market. This is due to a number of reasons, most importantly their audiobook store offering.

Audible currently houses over 450,000 titles and this number is growing daily! With a well-priced membership of just £7.99/$14.95 per month for one audiobook and 2 Audible Originals.

Their own publishing division, Audible Studios, offer exclusive audiobooks and Audible shows. Which include titles like “The Martian” and “Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection” read by Stephen Fry. For more information on Audible’s service check out our full review.

Or, if you still don’t know whether to go with a credit-based or unlimited audiobook service be sure to check out our Audible vs Scribd overview. These two are the best in their respective categories.

Audiobooks.com

Audiobooks.com is our next best credit based service that we want to talk about. They currently house over 150,000 titles. Their audiobook app is one of the simplest to use, and simplicity is key.

They have a feature called “Instacredit” that allows you to purchase new audiobooks with one click whilst using their app. Their price point is the same as Audible, £7.99 in the UK and $14.95 in the US.

You can try their audiobook subscription service for free. All you have to do is register for an account and you will receive a 30-days free trial that entitles you to one audiobook. Click here to get this amazing offer!

Kobo Audiobooks

The ebook giant Kobo entered the audiobook fight in late 2017. They must have seen the market growing with the recent rise in audiobook sales and wanted a piece of the pie. They have undercut Audible and Audiobooks.com on price. To receive one audiobook every month it will cost you £6.99 or $9.99 per month. They offer the cheapest credit based audiobook service on the market. Their audiobook offering is growing rapidly as they have strong connections with publishers already. They have two downfalls for us. You can only listen via their mobile app and you can’t purchase a new title through the Kobo app. That isn’t to say that they don’t offer a good service. Kobo is great if you are looking for one of the cheapest audiobook services. You can trial Kobo audiobooks using their free trial. Click the link below to benefit from this.

Downpour

The final credit based system is Downpour. They have a solid audiobook offering with over 100,000 titles. You can enjoy an audiobook a month from Downpour for $12.99 per month. This is good news if you are a customer from the United States, not so good if you are based in the U.K. Downpour does have a trick up their sleeve though. We are talking about their audiobook rental service. If you aren’t looking to own the audiobook forever, then you can rent the title for sometimes up to 70% of the full price. Check out Downpour’s offering via the button below.

Discount on audiobooks subscription

The last subscription system that we are going to cover is the discounted audiobook offering. The way it works is that you pay a small monthly fee which then entitles you to 35-50% off each audiobook. This is dependent on how many audiobooks you buy each month. To be honest, this audiobook membership method is our least favourite as it usually doesn’t work out cheaper than the other two options listed. The pros are that you get to keep the audiobooks forever, and with Audiobook Store the titles are DRM free.

Audiobooks Now and Audiobook Store are the two audiobook services that offer this system. You will have to pay $4.99 per month with Audiobooks Now to receive their membership discounts of up to 50%. Audiobook Store is slightly more expensive at $5.95 a month for their FlexPass membership.

Audiobooks Now

Audiobooks Now offer audiobooks at a reduced cost. If you have a membership with them you can gain 35-50% off full price titles. You will have to pay $4.99 per month for this deal, so depending on the book you choose it’s not always cheaper. They do offer a wide range of audiobooks which is good. When you register, on your first audiobook purchase you will receive 50% off the full price. Get a cheap audiobook and browse their titles further using the link below.

Free audiobook services

Our audiobook services page wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include the best free audiobook services that are available. Both of the free audiobook services that you will find below will require you to have a library card (digital or physical), so if you aren’t already registered to your local library or an online library then you will have to do this.

Once you do have a registered library card you can easily withdraw audiobooks for free. The store selections will vary depending on the library.

OverDrive/Libby

The first of the free audiobook services that we will introduce you to is OverDrive. They have also recently launched a new app called Libby, and we’ll explain the difference between the two later on.

Firstly, the OverDrive and Libby mobile apps can be downloaded on any iOS or Android device. Libby is also available for Windows device users, unlike the OverDrive app. So, the best free audiobook service for Windows users is definitely Libby. Libby, however, is just an audiobook app, whereas OverDrive is available to use on your desktop too.

To be able to access free audiobooks (and ebooks) from OverDrive or Libby you will need to locate your local library and enter the code on your library card. Once you have completed this step, you will then have access to withdraw audiobooks. You might be waiting a while for the most popular audiobooks, but with a bit of searching, you’ll find something that interests you. As we mentioned before, the titles on offer completely depend on what your local library stocks.

OverDrive - Libby

Hoopla Digital

Hoopla works in the exact same way as OverDrive and Libby, by connecting your library card to your local library’s online offering. One pro that Hoopla has is that it isn’t just audiobooks, they also offer ebooks, comics, movies, music and TV shows all for free. Could these little extras make it the best free audiobook service?

Our focus is on audiobooks though, and Hoopla allows you free listening via your local library. They have contracts with some of the top audiobook publishers so you can expect to find some of the best audiobooks on there.

Unfortunately, Hoopla is only available for residents in the USA and Canada. OverDrive is definitely the best free audiobook service, as they cater to over 40 countries! For all US and Canadian residents, you can go to your device’s app store to download the hoopla app, or else visit their website and stream online.

LibriVox

LibriVox.org is another free audiobook service that you can take advantage of. If you are into classic audiobooks then this is the right service for you. LibriVox has volunteer narrators reading books that are available in the public domain. You will find Dickens to Arthur Conan Doyle and many more great classics.

The downside to LibriVox is that the audio might not always be crystal clear, or you may lose your bookmark. There are also perfect recordings that can be enjoyed, and for a free audiobook service, you can’t really complain. Download the LibriVox app or go directly to their website to enjoy free audiobooks.

Other Audiobook Stores

iBooks

If you are an Apple device user then you can buy audiobooks through the iBooks app. They don’t offer a monthly audiobook subscription service. You will have to buy your chosen title outright using the card that you have registered to the Apple store. If you don’t want to download more apps you may find this useful. However, it is definitely a more expensive way of enjoying audiobooks.

Google Audiobooks

Kobo was a late entry, and Google was even later to the audiobook party. Google started offering audiobooks at the start of 2018, which pleased Google Assistant owners. You can relax whilst your home device reads any title from your library. The downside to Google’s audiobooks offering is that they don’t have a subscription service like Audible. You have to buy the book outright which can end up being quite expensive if you are an avid listener.

10 Best Audiobook Subscriptions to Become Smarter in 2021

You love to read books. You want to read more of them. But you never seem to have any time to crack one open.

Your whole day is spent going from one responsibility to the next. Going to work, picking up the kids, getting groceries, cleaning your home, going to the gym, etc. The list goes on!

So now you're considering audiobooks, because hey, you can listen to them at the same time as doing most of those things.

But you don’t want to add another bill to your expenses.

Why Are Audiobooks so Expensive?

Audiobooks cost significantly more to produce than hardcover or ebook versions of the same book.

The main reason is that it requires a lot of upfront investment, including casting voice artists, renting the recording studio, narrating the book, working with audio engineers, and post-production.

Publishers have to charge more to make a profit from audiobooks since the target audience is usually relatively small compared to the audience for movies or music.

For these reasons, buying audiobooks can quickly add up to a large sum, and not everyone can afford to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on audiobooks during a lifetime.

Audiobook Subscriptions: The Cheapest Way to Listen to Audiobooks

Luckily, multiple audiobook subscription services offer affordable ways to consume books and feed your curiosity.

The cheapest way to listen to audiobooks is to find an audiobook subscription that fits your needs (has books you like to read and is affordable).

An audiobook subscription works like any other digital subscription. You pay a monthly or annual subscription fee and can then access a limited or unlimited number of audiobooks, depending on the platform and the plan you choose.

While prices for a single audiobook range widely, from $25 to $50, you can get a monthly subscription for half that and listen to one or sometimes unlimited audiobooks.

Imagine How Much You Could Learn with Unlimited Audiobooks per Month

Reading is underrated.

I believe it’s one of the most rewarding activities you can do to learn new things, expand your worldview, and level up in your career.

However, reading can be extremely time-consuming. In contrast, audiobooks don’t require your full engagement and you can listen to new stories while commuting, exercising, or cooking dinner.

Knowledge is power.

If you feed your brain new information, it starts making unexpected connections. You become more knowledgeable and get a better understanding of the world, making your life easier.

Do Audiobooks Make You Smarter?

There’s no clear evidence, but ultra-successful and smart people read a lot.

Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Warren Buffett are known for their curiosity and extreme reading habits, and I’ll bet it’s highly correlated with their success.

Best 9 Audiobook Services for 2021 Free & Paid Apps

Wondering which audiobook service is the best? In our comparison review, you will learn which website has a better variety and quality of audiobooks, and which one has a better price, which comes with an unlimitaded subscription, and which one offers a credit system. Before you make any decicion, compare audiobook libraries and key feautures of each platform, and choose the service that best suits your needs.

Audiobooks are one of the easiest ways to cultivate a consistent reading habit. Don't get me wrong, I love reading a physical book, but between work and family, I often struggle to find time for that. And that is why I often choose audiobooks. You can literally listen to audiobooks anywhere, be it on your commute, on a vacation, or even in the shower. Audiobooks give you the opportunity to fully and productively manage every second of your day.

Listening to audiobooks is simple, all you need is a subscription to an audiobook platform that will give you access to the best audiobooks out there. There are a lot of audiobook services available today and each one has its own pros and cons, which makes choosing the best one a time-consuming and difficult task. I hope that this review of the best audiobook service in 2021 will help you make this choice easier.

Audible is a best audiobook service

1. Audible - Best quality and veriety audiobook service

Audible is, undoubtedly, the largest and most popular audiobook service as of 2021. Its library contains over 200,000 different book titles in every thinkable category. The service is a subsidiary of Amazon which explains its sheer size. When it comes to audiobooks, Audible offers you a lot of options and features. You can either buy, stream, or rent audiobooks. Plus, you have the option to download your preferred audiobooks so that you can listen to them offline.

Things I love about Audible:

- Audible comes with a free 30-day trial to help you get started. The free trial comes with two audiobooks and two Audible Originals.

- You get two Audible Originals every month as a bonus.

- Every member gets 30% off all audiobooks.

- All Audible books are yours to keep even if you decide to cancel your membership.

- Audible has a live sync feature that tracks progress. That means that the next time you resume listening to your book, you would just have to press "Play" and resume listening from where you left off.

- You can return and exchange any audiobook if you didn't like.

Scribd One of The Best Audiobook Services

2. Scribd: Best value & best unlimited audiobook subscription

Scribd is another excellent audiobook platform. It may not be as popular as Audible but it certainly gives Audible a run for its money. When Scribd was first launched, its initial focus was on e-books. However, today Scribd users get unlimited access not only to thousands of e-books, but also to audiobooks, magazines, and sheet music. You can use Scribd on your browser or download an app and use it on your mobile device. Scribd gives its users an option to download audiobooks for offline listening and streaming when on the go.

Things I love about Scribd:

- Scribd offers a free 30-day trial (Read the full Scribd review and my experience with it here) which gives you premium access to all audiobooks, e-books, magazines, and sheet music from their library.

- Scribd monthly cost is just $8,99. And yes, for that price you get unlimited access to all audiobooks, e-books, magazines, and sheet music.

- Possible to download books and listen to them offline.

- A "sleep timer" feature that lets you a set time when the audiobook should stop playing.

- Scribd allows its users to use the service on multiple devices. Here is a comparrison of Audible VS Scribd

Audiobooks.com Is #3 of best audiobook services

3. Audiobooks.com: top service with good quality

Another one of my favorite top audiobook subscription services is Audiobooks.com. It was launched back in 2011. The platform is similar to Audible in many ways, but I believe that it has its own advantages and unique features. The service can be used through a web browser or mobile app on a number of devices. Audiobooks.com has a very extensive library, almost as big as Audible.

Things I love about Audiobooks.com:

- Just like Audible and Scribd, Audiobooks.com comes with a free 30-day trial. If you decide to sign up for a trial, you will get one free audiobook plus one audiobook from their VIP section as a bonus.

- You get one audiobook from the Audiobooks.com curated VIP section every month at no extra cost.

- Audiobooks.com gives its members access to a podcast section that features over 70,000 podcasts.

- You get to keep all the audiobooks you purchased even if you cancel your subscription.

- Every audiobook comes with a 3-minute preview that you can listen to before you purchase it.

Things I don't like about Audiobooks.com:

- Their basic subscription plan is $14.95 a month and it gives you access to just one book (plus one book from the VIP section, as mentioned above).

MyAudiobooks.com review and my opinion: Is Audiobooks.com worth it?

Playster #4 in best audiobook services

4. Playster.com: cheapest and most flexible audiobook website

Playster is a great platform for streaming audiobooks and other media like games, movies, and TV shows. It is often referred to as the "Netflix for Everything". If you are looking for a platform that will give you unlimited access to all the media at a very low price, then Playster might be perfect for you. Their unlimited plans are truly unlimited. Playster has an amazing collection of over 100,000 audiobooks and once you pay the $14,95/month subscription fee, you can stream or download any audiobook of your choice.

Things I love about Playster:

-The Playster free 30-day trial gives you unlimited access to Playster library and allows you to enjoy all e-books, music, movies, TV shows, and games, plus listen to extended audiobook excerpts (each one usually lasts several hours).

- You can use save all of your favorite music, e-books, audiobooks, TV shows, and movies to your mobile device, and stream them anytime even when you are offline.

- For just $34,95 a month you can purchase the Playster Unlimited Standard plan that includes unlimited access to audiobooks, e-books, music, TV shows, movies, games, etc.

- Playster is always ad-free.

- Possible to customize playback speed.

Things I don't like about Playster:

- To get unlimited access to all of the newest titles on the day of the release, you need to have a subscription to a Premium plan which costs $29.95 per month.

- If you decide to cancel your membership, you won't be able to keep any of the titles you downloaded.

Librivox #5 In Best Audiobook Service

5. Librivox: best free audiobook service

Last, but not least, I want to talk about LibriVox, a great audiobook streaming and download platform that comes with hundreds of audiobooks across many categories including fiction, non-fiction, educational, and motivational. LibriVox is the only service on this list that will let you listen to an amazing collection of books without forking out a single cent. All audiobooks on LibriVox are in the public domain. These books are read by volunteers which makes them completely free. You can listen to LibriVox audiobooks on your computer, iPod, or mobile devices. If you fancy classics, then LibriVox should be one of your primary destinations. LibriVox also gives you the opportunity to volunteer through reading public domain books so other people can listen. A great way to give back.

Things I love about LibriVox:

- LibriVox audiobooks are free for anyone to listen to.

- Each audiobook has a summary and comes with a sample reading.

- Features many classic books.

Things I don't like about LibriVox:

- Compared to other audiobook services, LibriVox has a much smaller collection of audiobooks in its library.

- Audiobooks are not professionally recorded, and the quality is often quite low.

Read Full LibriVox review HERE

To conclude this IMHO Review of the 5 best audiobook services, I want to say that there are many other good platforms including AudiobooksNow, Kobo, Librophile, Simplyaudiobooks. It can be quite challenging to choose among the best audiobook services since each one has its own unique features. The good news is that pretty much every platform comes with a free 30-day trial and you don't have to spend any money before you find the one that suits your needs the best.

Best Audiobook Services

The Kobo app is a free app from a Canadian company that allows you to read books from a collection of more than 5 million titles for a paid subscription fee.

Things I love about Kobo:

  • You can borrow library books for free through Overdrive.

  • It is integrated with Pocket, enabling you to read longer articles you saved in your account while you were using your desktop computer.

  • Your first audiobook is free.

  • You have access to millions of audiobooks and eBooks right away.

  • The paid subscription fee costs $9.99 a month, which is less expensive than other platforms, such as Audible.

  • You can buy extra credits each month.

  • The app provides custom recommendations based on the books you have read.

  • There are book previews and reviews to help you choose your next book.

  • The app automatically synchronizes your bookmarks between your devices so that you never lose your place and you can switch back and forth as much as you would like.

Kobo Audiobook Service

Things I don't like about Kobo:

  • It is difficult to figure out where you are in the book—although Kobo keeps track of chapters, it counts portions of the book that are not actually chapters, making the chapter count inaccurate.

  • The narrator often might change in the middle of a chapter, which is something you would see on a page, but it is not included in the app, making it jarring for the reader.

  • There might be a bit of a lag when you want to turn the page.

Hoopla is a free app that connects to your local library account, allowing you to instantly borrow somewhere between 10 and 20 titles a month, depending on your library.

Things I love about Hoopla:

  • Hoopla not only includes audiobooks, but also eBooks, music albums, comics, TV shows and movies.

  • You can borrow titles from your library instantly, instead of having to place holds and wait for weeks or months as you do in similar apps such as Overdrive.

  • You can use the app on your phone or borrow and stream a movie or audiobook from the browser of your laptop.

  • The catalog in the app is easy to use and well-organized.

  • You can keep audiobooks for three weeks, and movies for approximately three days.

  • There is a wide selection, with more than 500,000 titles available, and titles change fairly regularly to update the selection.

  • You can download an audiobook or other title to avoid streaming or using data.

  • The app is totally free, and there are no late fees or fines.

Hoopla Audiobooks

Things I don't like about Hoopla:

  • You can only borrow a certain number of titles each month, and if you do not read a title or you borrow the wrong one by accident, it still counts as one of your borrows.

  • You cannot highlight content in an eBook.

  • Certain libraries might also only allow you to borrow a certain number of titles per day of the total borrow allowance.

Google’s audiobooks are priced individually, ranging from approximately $1.99 to $40 each, offering listeners the opportunity to own books from their extensive catalogue through the Google Play Books app.

Things I love about Google Audiobooks:

You can use the timer feature to automatically stop the book after a certain amount of time, which is helpful if you are listening at night and do not want to lose your place if you fall asleep.

You can increase the speed of the narrator’s voice if you feel that he or she is reading too slowly.

You can keep a book forever when you purchase it.

Your progress is synchronized across all of your devices.

It does not require a monthly subscription fee.

You do not necessarily have to download any app—you can listen solely through your browser.

Google Audiobook Service

Things I don't like about Google Audiobooks:

  • There is almost no free content.

  • Books are sometimes more expensive than on other digital reading websites such as Audible.

With Downpour, users can purchase or rent individual titles or pay for a subscription.

Things I love about Downpour:

  • You can save titles you would like to listen to in a wishlist.

  • You can adjust the speed of the narration.

  • It has a sleep timer setting so that you can set it to stop at a certain time.

  • You can rent titles as cheaply as $1.99, and they do not use up your monthly credit allowance if you have a subscription.

  • Rentals are good for a month or two months, and you can rent for even longer if you pay a bit extra.

  • You can purchase additional credits each month.

  • Downpour credits last for a year, which means that if you go a few months without using any, you can save them up.

  • You can use Downpour through the app or in the browser on your computer.

  • There are 22 genre categories and hundreds of subcategories, which make it easier to find exactly the type of audiobook you are searching for.

  • You can read through reviews of the title right in the app.

  • The customer support team responds quickly and helpfully.

Downpour audiobooks service

Things I don't like about Downpour:

  • The content library is smaller than other platforms, at only around 80,000 titles.

  • At $12.99 per month, the subscription fee is more expensive than Kobo.

  • You only get one credit a month with the subscription, which means whichever title you choose costs $12.99.

  • There are fewer search categories if you use the app as opposed to the browser version of Downpour.

  • You cannot return titles if you do not end up liking them.

  • The customer support team is not available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I only write reviews about services and products that I personally use, like and believe in. I'm a glass-half-full kind of person and I usually try to see good things rather than wasting my time thinking about the drawbacks. I strongly believe that if you take action and dedicate some time and effort, you will get your money worth and change your life for the better. Although I always list "cons" and strive to be as objective as possible, I also think that focusing too much on negative aspects can lead to procrastination and having a negative experience.
