Time with God

If you have been around me long enough, you most likely know my favorite book in the Bible is James.

I’ll never forget that time when my mentor was leading a bible study on the book of James-though it has been a few years, she explained the book in such detailed and applicable manner that this book has since been my favorite.

Today I want to share 10 of my favorite verses from James:

1. My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. (1:2-3)

2. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. (5-6)

3. So then,my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;(19)

4. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. (22-24)

5. For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. (2:10)

6. What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (2:14-17)

7. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (4:7-8)

8. Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”(4:13-15)

9. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (5:16)

10. Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. (5:19-20)

Phew! I know that was a handful from a small book of only 5 chapters but there is so much to learn from this epistle.

I love that James is challenging us to not just believe but to exercise our faith.

I encourage you to do an in-depth study of this book as there are so many awesome lessons to learn!
