Since the s, sportbikes have brought something to the motorcycle industry that is all their own. The sheer speed and incredible power to weight ratio is the name of the game and neither of these beasts is playing around. Not recommended for the inexperienced rider, the Hayabusa and the ZXr are motorcycles designed to maneuver long stretches of pavement in knowledgeable hands at top speeds.

Both the Suzuki Hayabusa and the Kawasaki Ninja ZXr have reputations preceding them. They are iconic touring machines that make good use of trickle down technology from Moto GP. Some of the fastest motorcycles in production, these two are historic rivals.

I&#;ll admit –– I might have a slight bias toward the Hayabusa because my husband set a land speed record on one at the Bonneville salt flats in Utah. I also love that a bird of prey is its mascot. But the Kawasaki Ninja ZXr is in its own way a great example of speed-hungry engineering.

The Suzuki Hayabusa

In the Suzuki Hayabusa hit the sport bike scene. Named for the fastest bird in the world, Hayabusa is the Japanese word for a peregrine falcon. These birds of prey also eat blackbirds and one of the Busa&#;s biggest competitors was the now-retired Honda Blackbird.


Today, the Hayabusa is still outstanding in its class, one of the fastest bikes sold, and it&#;s praised for a comfortable ride. The Suzuki Hayabusa boasts a generous wide wheelbase with smooth and simple drivability –– and a maximum speed of mph. It comes in two colors: candy daring red and daring gray paint.

With a starting price of $14,, the Busa is also pretty affordable. This sportbike features an inline four-cylinder liquid-cooled 1,cc engine. It reaches horsepower, pound-feeet of torque, and pounds of curb weight. The Suzuki Hayabusa is created for smooth operation at speed and rides hard enough for even the most skilled riders to have a lot of fun with. But the Kawasaki is a strong contender.

The Kawasaki Ninja ZXr

The ZXr is serious competition for the Suzuki Hayabusa. Famed for being the first factory sportbike to surpass miles per hour since classics like the HDR Vincent Black Shadow had clocked such speeds on the salt flats in the s, the Ninja ZXr came onto the scene doing mph in ––according to Cycle World. This bike definitely holds its own with the Hayabusa. In fact, it actually goes faster.

It has arguably been the better bike since the release saw massive upgrades. The Kawasaki bike comes in either metallic diablo black or golden blazed green. It&#;s a little more expensive starting at $14,, but some might argue that you get what you pay for.

The Kawasaki Ninja ZXr touts a tremendous top speed of mph. This is made possible by a 1,cc inline four-cylinder that creates horsepower and pound-feet of torque. This touring bike is made for speed and durability. Its curb weight of pounds is powered by engineering that also benefits some from Moto GP.

Though the Kawasaki may lack in terms of the more luxurious feeling offered by the Suzuki Hayabusa, it can go a few more miles per hour faster due to a slightly larger displacement. As far as these bikes go, they are pretty neck and neck and it&#;s obvious why they appeal to such devoted fans.

Which is the superior sportbike?

Each of these touring sportbikes boast high quality and smart mechanics. For a bike you plan to spend as much time with as a long distance road warrior like one of these, you&#;ll want to choose carefully. The Hayabusa comes at a better price, has a smoother suspension contributing to better ride comfort, in addition to ample power and an expert handle. The ZXr, for the most part, just has those extra miles per hour in its wheelhouse –– maybe it really isn&#;t worth the extra cash.

Regardless of top speeds or a bit of an edge where power is concerned, the Hayabusa will always remain a favorite. Loyal fans love this motorcycle, but the ZXr has definitely gained its own following. Depending on a few small details, buyers join with one side or the other.

A supercharged superbike?

Recent power increases in cc superbikes, many of which now produce nearly crankshaft horsepower, have created a problem for hyperbikes like the Kawasaki ZX and Suzuki Hayabusa. Once the flnal word in top speed and fiat-out acceleration, these road-burning behemoths are now regularly outperformed by lighter, nimbler literbikes in a straight line as well as around corners. The solution? Take advantage of the fact that unlimited-class machines have no race regulations to conform to and add a _huge _extra dollop of power in the form of a supercharger.

No fewer than four new patent documents reveal that Kawasaki is working on a supercharged four-cylinder motorcycle as a potential replacement for the ZX One, titled “Two-wheeled motor vehicle with supercharger,” covers the overall layout of the bike. The supercharger is located behind the cylinder block and underneath the throttle bodies, and gear-driven directly off the crankshaft. Fresh air enters between the headlights, then runs over the engine and down to the supercharger, where it’s compressed and fed back to the throttle bodies.

This is not uncharted territory for Kawasaki. The firm already uses a remarkably similar supercharged four-cylinder engine in its Ultra X personal watercraft. With a _slightly _larger, cc capacity and an intercooler attached to the supercharger, the Ultra X is rated at bhp. Even without an intercooler—no evidence of any is shown in the motorcycle patent documents—a supercharged ZX should still produce at least bhp at modest, reliable boost levels.

A supercharged streetbike has been rumored to be under development at Kawasaki since , and this year there are already rumblings in the Japanese press that the ZX will be replaced and/or updated for the model year. This could be the perfect opportunity to add the supercharged version to the range. Relatively low development costs—adding forced induction to an existing engine is far cheaper than developing an entirely new powerplant—makes this an even more likely situation. Still struggling against a depressed sales environment, Japanese manufacturers like Kawasaki are looking for every opportunity to create excitement without incurring excessive expenses. A manufacturer is defined by the motorcycles it makes, and the defining characteristic of Kawasaki motorcycles has always been power - lots of power. It became the horsepower king waaay back when it released the H1 cc three cylinder two-stroke triple in the late sixties, and built on that reputation with the cc H2 three cylinder two-stroke triple and finally the Z1 cc four cylinder machine and the family of big four cylinder four-strokes that bike spawned – the Z, Z1-R, GPZR and all the way through to the modern hyper-bikes like the ZZ-R and Ninja ZXR, Kawasaki’s flagship machines have set performance standards.

There’s absolutely no doubt that Kawasaki has been getting ready to take on the Hayabusa for several years – the ZX12 was expected to be a Hayabusa-beater and despite its ram air induction system inflating real horsepower from at low speed to at high speed (the forced air induction acts has the same effect as a supercharger), its aerodynamics let it down. But the ZX14 has obviously spent a lot of time in the wind tunnel as Kawasaki prides itself on the performance factor and it wanted to be the fastest of the bunch again. And there is absolutely no doubt that despite the big K’s coyness, the new Ninja ZXwill be the most powerful and the fastest ever and continue the tradition by delivering as-yet-unheard-of levels of performance and excitement. Its aerodynamics reminds users that Kawasaki is indeed an aircraft manufacturer.

Kawasaki engineers and designers have created a motorcycle that turns its Ram Air and fuel-injected engine into the core of a powerful, torque-producing, aerodynamic stunner that will draw attention from onlookers whether on the road, or parked on the roadside. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX is a cc motorcycle, that is its most powerful ever, and succeeds in setting the performance standards for others to follow.

This all new in-line four has evolved from the Ninja ZXR and features a bore and stroke of 84 x 61mm packed into a purposefully designed compact outline that minimizes engine width, leaving it at virtually the same width as the 12R.

A twist of the throttle delivers a seamless spread of torque that is so linear, the "power band," per se, ceases to exist. Riders will pay particular attention to the impressive response that kicks in once the motor exceeds 6, rpm. Those that have ridden this newest Kawasaki flagship marvel at the torque response that makes pulling away from a total stop in almost any gear a possibility.

The engine uses a secondary balancer to tame unwanted vibrations, and a direct-actuation shift lever is lighter than conventional linkage-type set-ups, offering a more direct feel for the rider.

The ZX's chassis design is every bit the equal of its power plant. It is an advanced version of Kawasaki's unique aluminum monocoque frame, lightweight and very strong. This sophisticated approach gives the ZX a responsive handling quality and incredible highway stability. By utilizing this frame technology, engineers were able to concentrate on delivering, as mentioned, a very slim, compact package. Inherently more rigid than twin-spar frames, and with the engine rigid-mounted, the monocoque's strength is greatly increased.

With the engine positioned forward in the frame, engineers were able to carefully select the wheelbase and front/rear wheel weight balance to achieve both high speed stability and responsive handling. The ZX uses an inverted 43mm cartridge fork and new Uni-Trak linkage rear suspension to complement the highly rigid frame, thus offering both great controllability at high speeds and superb road holding when sport riding on twisting hill roads.

The ZZR or Kawasaki Ninja ZX and ZXR (–), is a motorcycle in the Ninjasport bike series from the Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki that was their most powerful sport bike as of [8] It was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show[9] and released for the model year as a replacement for the Kawasaki ZZ-R (). The ZZR is capable of accelerating from 0&#;60&#;mph in seconds.[10] The top speed is electronically limited to &#;mph (&#;km/h) as a result of an agreement between the major Japanese and European motorcycle manufacturers.

saw a minor update. The launch of the ZXR saw a second-generation revision with the R designation.[11] This included a displacement increase to produce more horsepower along with two variable power modes, Kawasaki traction control, and an ignition-management system that was lifted from the ZXR. It received cosmetic updates, incremental chassis upgrades, and suspension revised internals and a slipper clutch added for the first time. The new motor had cylinder heads with polished ports and cams with more lift and longer duration. Pistons made were lighter with added compression, cooled by a new oil jet system. Connecting rods and crankshaft were strengthened, as were the tensioner and cam chain, while the transmission got heat-treated surface gears. In an effort to make the motorcycle run cooler, and therefore be more durable, they added a second radiator fan. Larger head pipes and larger mufflers with a less restrictive air filter improved response. Motorcyclist recorded Rickey Gadson's quarter mile time of seconds at &#;mph from a bone-stock bike, on a degree morning, at an altitude of feet.[12] Cycle World recorded a quarter-mile time of a record seconds (corrected) at &#;mph, and also hit 60&#;mph in just sec.[13]

High-Output Engine

Kawasaki’s powerful engine puts it at the top of its class. With the ultra-smooth power delivery, there’s a sharp acceleration feel in the mid- to high-rpm range. Advanced Electronic Riding Aids

Kawasaki Traction Control System (KTRC)

  • 3-mode system combines the best features of Sport-KTRC from the Ninja ZXR and KTRC from the Concours® 14 to help provide maximum traction with some degree of slippage for track riding and rider assurance by facilitating smooth riding on slippery surfaces.
  • Modes 1 and 2 control ignition timing like S-KTRC, which uses complex analysis to calculate when traction conditions are about to become unfavorable and act before wheel slippage exceeds the range for optimal traction. Mode 3 has higher sensitivity and controls ignition timing, fuel and air for ultra-smooth operation.
  • The system distinguishes between smooth, power front wheel lifts and sudden lift, allowing smooth lift if acceptable acceleration is maintained.
  • A switch on the left handlebar switch housing gives the rider the option to turn the system off.

Power Mode

  • Allows riders to set power characteristics to suit riding conditions and style. Riders can choose between full power operation or low power, which is approximately 75 percent of full with a milder throttle response.

Ram Air Induction(KP)

Monocoque Aluminum Frame(KP)

  • Engine is rigidly mounted to increase the monocoque’s torsional rigidity. Plus using the engine as a stressed frame member decreases the frame’s weight by approximately four pounds.

Kawasaki Ninja ZXR Design

No doubt about it, the body panels give the Ninja 14R a very distinct look that seems to borrow elements from Kawi&#;s sport-tourer model, the Contours The windtunnel-tested fairing leads the way with a ram-air port that shunts pressurized air from the entry directly into the airbox and a six pack of headlights to split the night. A bubble screen tops the front fairing to punch a hole in the weather, though you&#;ll have to tuck in all the way to get any benefit from it, and on either side, the mirrors ride in low-drag housings.

Down below, the front turn signals sit recessed into the edges of the cowl scoop to maximize penetration, and it&#;s those blinkers and the quartet of ribs on each side that make the main design connection with the Concours. The fairing flows down to form a chin fairing/belly pan for almost percent coverage of the drivetrain, but the real magic of the body design is hidden in plain view; more on that shortly.

Clip-ons pull the pilot forward and down over the gallon fuel tank with jockey-mount foot controls to define a rather aggressive rider&#;s triangle entirely in keeping with the 14R&#;s race-tastic tendencies. Yeah, it&#;s great for stupidfast rides, but for the everyday commute, maybe not so much; it just ain&#;t that kind of bike.

The instrument panel rocks a pair of analog clocks with blackout faces bordered with bright bezels to display speed and rpm. An LCD screen displays its metrics against a backlit face, or you can flip the script and run with a blackout face behind light lettering. A fistful of idiot lights finish off the instrumentation, and the LCD screen doubles as a rider interface for the various ride-quality subsystems.

The seat rides inches off the ground with a narrow build where it meets the tank, but it quickly flares out with enough of a vertical offset in back to keep your butt where it belongs. Like the front blinkers, the rear turn signals are recessed into the tail to minimize drag, and the taillight and tagholder ride nice and high, tight to the tail and out of harm&#;s way. A rear fairing snaps on over the pillion pad to give the 14R a solo look if you so desire, but if you want to haul a passenger you can pull it off and flip out the subframe-mount footpegs to accommodate a friend.

The frame on the Ninja ZXR, such as it is, is of a monocoque design that uses the aluminum body panels as a stressed skin to complete the structure, kind of like a Piaggioscooter on steroids. Rake measures in at 23 degrees from the vertical with inches of trail for some very nimble handling. The lightweight aluminum structure compliments that, as well, to make the 14R handle like a smaller machine in spite of its pound curb weight and bulk.

Inverted forks float the front end on 43 mm inner fork tubes with inches of travel and the full trinity of adjustments. Out back, a Uni-Trak monoshock delivers the trifecta as well with inches of travel and an adjustable ride-height feature that&#;ll give you a little bit of extra flexibility. Symmetrical, inch cast-alloy rims rock a /70 up front followed by a /50, and of course, the hoops come with a “ZR” rating so they can take whatever you can dish out.

Dual, mm discs and four-pot Brembo anchors slow the front wheel, and a mm disc and twin-piston caliper to slow the rear with ABS protection all around, not entirely unlike the H2&#;s binders. I&#;m a little surprised that the antilocks don&#;t seem to be switchable, but I guess it&#;s safer to leave them on, considering the performance envelope of this particular Ninja. Even the brake lines are off the top shelf with a braided stainless sleeve that delivers precise pressure and feedback, and radial-mount master cylinders and calipers to boot.

The beating heart of the Ninja ZXR is still the showstopper with its four-cylinder, liquid-cooled design that packs in a total of 1, cc. Bore and stroke measure out at 84 mm and 65 mm, respectively, and while the “resting” compression ratio is pretty high at to-1, there&#;s no telling what the actual pressure gets up to once the ram-air effect really starts to make itself felt up somewhere near the mph mark. Sure, that generates a significant amount of heat, but the forged pistons are kept cool by an oil jet that bathes the underside of the crown to draw off some of the waste heat.

Dual over-head cams time the valve head, and this newest version features cams with higher lift and polished intake ports to aid in aspiration along with the ram-effect intake system. Kawi fitted 44 mm Mikuni throttle bodies to control the induction with its Dual Throttle Valve technology that smoothes out transitions and stabilize bottom-end performance. To maximize power, the factory used liberal bypass holes to reduce pumping losses as the pistons shove the air around the bottom end.

The electronic riding aids come off the top shelf with Kawi&#;s own Traction Control system to prevent excessive wheel slip and front wheel lift-up, and it gives you a choice between three levels of intervention. The Power Modes let you dial in the full pound-feet of torque that maxes out at 7, rpm, or tune it down to about percent of that for a bit of a milder ride. Bear in mind, “mild” is a relative term here.

Power tops out at ponies that flows through a slipper clutch and a six-speed transmixxer before it heads to the rear wheel via an O-ring chain drive. The 14R will top out somewhere around mph with a second (or so) 1/4-mile time that maxes at mph. Like I said before; it&#;s a stupid-fast bike. What does all that get you? Well, in a whole heap o&#; trouble if you ain&#;t careful.

At $15k, MSRP on the MY version is a bit less expensive than the previous SE model. This year, the ZXR rolls in two-tone Metallic Diablo Black/Golden Blazed Green.

As I worked on this machine, it became clear that the 14R makes a dandy competitor for Suzuki&#;s top-flight supersport; the Hayabusa.

Suzuki Hayabusa

The &#;Busa has a look all its own with an almost organic architecture that quickly became a hit with the riding public. Like the Ninja, the design is all about low-drag penetration for top-end performance, but it has a panache unlike anything else in the world.

Suzuki relies on a more traditional skeleton with an aluminum twin-spar frame that rocks a steering damper for a bit of an advantage over the Ninja, and fully adjustable suspension front and rear. ABS comes standard, and the &#;Busa carries a similar electronics suite with Dual Throttle Valves and Idle Speed Control on top of a Drive Mode Selector, but nothing in the way of traction control, so the Ninja comes out on top here.

Suzuki surrenders a few cubes to Kawi with only 1, cc packed away. This dips into the power a skosh with pound-feet at the rear wheel versus around from the Ninja, and top speed is mph, not that it really matters if you don&#;t have the skills to handle that kind of energy anyway. The &#;20 &#;Busa rolls for $14, for a difference that is just a big nothing-burger at the checkout.

I generally don&#;t like the looks of Kawi supersports, but I&#;m digging this one, even if it&#;s so far beyond my skill and ambition it ain&#;t even funny. In all seriousness, only the most serious riders need even test ride one of these. It&#;s not going to make you look cool on your commute I take that back, it will make you look cool, but you will not be comfortable. Plus, it&#;s more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow, and unless you have access to a closed-circuit race course or a salt flat in your backyard, you will never be able to open it up enough to do this machine justice.
