Introduction: Adobe Game Developer Tools

Category: Industry News     |     Tags: Business, Games

Flash emerged as the king of casual game development platforms in the early &#;s. After 2 key stumbles (Apple iOS announces no Flash Player in iOS browsers) and industry-wide confusion about the &#;death of Flash&#;, Adobe is marketing furiously to offer value to developers and spread the word.

The Life Of Flash;

  • Flash Player Running in the Apple iOS browser, is not possible. This is the ONLY segment where we saw a &#;death&#; of Flash, so far. However, Flash-created apps in the iOS app store are possible, powerful, and popular.
  • Flash Player Running in the Android browser, is possible on many devices. In my opinion,it will become less popular as HTML5 matures in the next few years. However, Flash-created apps in the iOS app store are possible, powerful, and popular.
  • Flash Player Running in the PC computer browser, is popular on PC, Mac, & Linux. In my opinion,it will be continue to be popular.
  • Flash content via the computer desktop (as &#;apps) is popular on PC, Mac, & Linux. In my opinion,it will be continue to be popular.
  • Flash content via other devices (Smart TV&#;s and more) will continue to be popular.

The most recent effort by Adobe to push its Flash Platform technology is Adobe Game Developer Tools, announced in December Here is a recap of the highlights.

Adobe IDEs

From Adobe: You have great ideas for cool games. Now, we&#;re providing you with the essential tools to rapidly build, optimize, and deliver your games to iOS, Android™, Windows®, and Mac OS.

Here are the IDE&#;s to help you create your projects;

  • Adobe Flash Builder &#; Build amazing games and applications in ActionScript for Android, iOS, Windows and Mac OS X platforms using a single cross-platform development environment. Now with support for Adobe Scout. In my opinion, its best just for creating and animating assets.
  • Adobe Gaming SDK &#; Adobe Flash Professional software is a powerful authoring environment for creating rich, engaging games and interactive content that reaches desktops, tablets, and smartphones with unparalleled consistency. In my opinion, its best just for coding and integrating existing assets.

What is Adobe Gaming?

  • Create games faster. Reach over billion people. &#; Only Adobe® Flash® Player and Adobe® AIR® let you deliver your game to million iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Kindle Fire, and NOOK mobile devices and 99% of connected computers — with no additional install. One codebase. Use amazing tools and take advantage of simple, powerful APIs and frameworks enjoyed by a large and growing game developer community. In my opinion the cross-platform nature and existing community of developers are the most compelling reasons to use Flash Player & AIR.
  • Cinematic graphics. Console-quality games. &#; The Flash runtime now delivers GPU accelerated graphics across browsers and mobile apps for x faster, stunning 2D and 3D games. Craft amazing gameplay with native mouse, multi-touch, accelerometer, camera, and mic support. Code with human-friendly ActionScript®. Or take your C/C++ or Unity games and easily target the Flash runtime. Play beautifully. In my opinion, the quality of graphics & audio what Adobe now offers is first class.
  • Make more money. And make more fun. &#; In my opinion, this is just marketing-speak. However there is a HUGE amount of existing Flash developers (i.e. better talent at lower costs) and the SDK&#;s exist to make your projects social and sales-friendly.

What are Adobe Game Developer Tools?

You have great ideas for cool games. Now, we&#;re providing you with the essential tools to rapidly build, optimize, and deliver your games to iOS, Android™, Windows®, and Mac OS. To get started, all you need to do is download the Adobe Game Developer Tools through a free Creative Cloud membership. If you already have a Creative Cloud membership, the Game Developer Tools are included!

Here&#;s what you&#;ll get when you download the tools:

  • Adobe Scout &#; Adobe Scout is a new profiling and optimization tool for Flash Player on desktop and mobile to help you get the best performance possible. (Free now, premium later, TBD)
  • Adobe Gaming SDK &#; The Adobe Gaming SDK gives you a complete collection of frameworks, code samples, and learning resources that work together to help you accelerate your productivity.
  • Flash C++ Compiler &#; Cross compile C/C++ to run your game in Flash Player with GPU acceleration. Deliver your back catalog of games to target billion connected desktops.

What are Adobe Game Developer Tools? (Really)

Adobe is now attracting non-Flash game development companies. For that market the AGDT is a well-marketed introduction to Flash. Newbies can hit the ground running; (theoretically) using any legacy C++ code, getting started with the frameworks in the SDK, and doing powerful profiling with Scout.

For existing Flash developers perhaps none of this is interesting. There are many Flash experts who use no C++, who already have access to the frameworks in the SDK. Scout is very powerful, and indeed is worth the (unannounced) price of entry. But not every game developer profiles his or her projects or knows the great value in doing so. However, I do think that Adobe&#;s increasing powerful set of tools, and energized game-specific marketing will help focus the game industry on Adobe&#;s tools, and too, Adobe-centric game developers. That is great.

This answers your Flash question

There are plenty of materials about game development in Flash/Actionscript3, but I would recommend you to learn about a game engine first. It will make your life easier and will help you make a game faster (which will boost your motivation).

Two famous Flash game engines are Flixel and Starling. Start by checking these GamedevTuts+ guides: how to learn Flixel and how to learn Starling (there is an article about how to learn Flash/AS3 too).

I would recommend you to take a look at GamedevTuts+. It has several resources about game development, from simple concepts to more advanced things. You will find articles for people with no programming experience at all. It's a great place to start as a novice game developer.

You could also use Phaser to create your games. It's an easy to learn HTML5 game engine, it doesn't require several tools to develop with (all you need is a code editor and a web server) and your game will run on any modern browser.

Create 3D-Models with Adobe - for your Games, renders or 3D-Prints!

IntelliJ IDEA has complete support for the Adobe Gaming SDK, i.e. Adobe AIR SDK bundled together with Away3D, Starling and Feathers frameworks. In this tutorial you'll get step-by-step instructions on how to set up, build and run sample applications included in the SDK.

We assume you have Adobe Gaming SDK installed on your computer and IntelliJ IDEA is running. Samples included in the SDK are shipped with Flash Builder project files (.project, .actionScriptProperties, etc.), and this makes setting up an IntelliJ IDEA project quick and easy, because IntelliJ IDEA is able to import a Flash Builder project in just a few clicks.

If you are new to IntelliJ IDEA but have experience with Flash Builder or other Eclipse-based products, there are some differences in terminology that you should keep in mind:

  • Flash Builder workspace is the equivalent of IntelliJ IDEA project.
  • Flash Builder project is the equivalent of IntelliJ IDEA Flash module.

IntelliJ IDEA Flash module contains one or more Flash build configurations. A build configuration is a set of parameters that define how to produce SWF or SWC, HTML wrapper or AIR descriptor, Desktop, Android or iOS package from the module source.

1. Import Flash Builder project(s)

1a. Import a single Flash Builder project

To import a single Flash Builder project, select File | Open or click Open Project on the IntelliJ IDEA welcome screen. Then in the file chooser select a .project file, e.g. [SDK]/Samples/Away3D/Invawayders/.project. If you decide to import a single project, you will skip step 2.

1b. Import multiple Flash Builder projects

To import multiple projects, select File | Import Project or click Import Project on the IntelliJ IDEA welcome screen. Then in the file chooser select the base folder to search for projects in: [SDK]/Samples

2. Pass 'Import Project' wizard

At the next step select Import project from external model and Flash Builder.

Leave the defaults at the next step.

Now you can choose which projects to import. Let's keep them all.

3. Configure SDK

If you have Flash Builder installed on your computer, IntelliJ IDEA will automatically select Flex or AIR SDK from the Flash Builder installation. Otherwise you'll be asked to select SDK manually.

Click [], at the next dialog click [+], select Flex/AIR SDK on the popup, and then select the path to AIR SDK bundled with Adobe Gaming SDK: [SDK]/AIR SDK/air_p5_sdk_asc2_win_.

4. Explore Project Structure

Now all samples are imported and ready to be started. But first let's explore the structure of the IntelliJ IDEA project we just created (the Project Structure button on the main toolbar).

  • At the bottom you will see a list of errors, the reason being that keystore and provisioning profile paths were hard-coded in the Flash Builder project. When you decide to launch some app on the real device, you'll need to fix them (click the arrow icon to the right to navigate to the field with the error).
  • If you are new to IntelliJ IDEA, we suggest looking through all build configurations and all tabs just to get used to IntelliJ IDEA settings.
  • Two things to fix in StarlingTemplateMobile module: disable iOS support for Scaffold_Android build configuration and disable Android support for Scaffold_iOS build configuration. Flash Builder doesn't allow you to select supported mobile targets per app (only per project) - that's why this was not imported automatically.
  • If you were not asked to select SDK manually (step 3), that means that IntelliJ IDEA has found a suitable SDK in the Flash Builder installation and has configured it (as is the case on the screenshot). You may keep it as is, or you may change it to AIR SDK from the Adobe Gaming SDK - just click New button next to the Flex/AIR SDK field on the Dependencies tab.
  • In any case we suggest that you configure documentation URL for the SDK. Having the URL, IntelliJ IDEA will fetch documentation automatically when you invoke 'Quick documentation popup', use code completion, etc. To do so, click the Edit button next to the Flex/AIR SDK field, select Documentation Paths tab, click Specify URL button and then OK (correct URL is already preselected). Alternatively, you can download the docs and configure a local path.

5. Look through the Run Configurations

Look through the Run configurations created by IntelliJ IDEA (Run | Edit Configurations). Flash run configurations have different options depending on the target platform of the build configuration on which run configuration is based: Web, Desktop or Mobile. You don't have anything to fix here; the purpose of this step is just to understand that you can configure the following:

  • where to launch a Web-targeted app: OS default app, browser or standalone Flash Player;
  • where lo launch a Mobile app: Emulator, iOS Simulator, Android device, or iOS device;
  • etc.

6. Explore the source code

Coding assistance is the strongest feature of IntelliJ IDEA. It includes code highlighting, completion, analysis (including UML), refactorings, intentions, inspections, code generation, navigation and much more. I won't focus on these features in this tutorial (a whole book could be written on the topic), but at the first glance you'll notice a lot of warnings about unused imports, unused classes/fields/methods/parameters, methods that could be static, fields that could be converted to local vars, and so on.

7. Start the app.

Just select any run configuration in the corresponding tool bar combo box and click Run or Debug.

8. Develop with pleasure!
