Island Lake (Kitsap County)

Rainbow trout

Fishing success for Rainbow Trout is generally best in the spring when thousands of fish are stocked statewide, but they can be caught year-round in most waters with a little patience and persistence. Success remains high into June and gradually declines as water temperatures increase and fish move offshore to stay cool. Fish that escaped the spring harvest return to the nearshore areas in the fall as waters cool off. Some waters may also be stocked again in the fall further boosting catch rates.

Coastal cutthroat trout (resident)

Fishing is best for Coastal Cutthroat in the spring and fall. There is a summer lull as fish move offshore into deeper waters to escape the summer heat in July and August. Catch is lowest in the late-winter while adults are spawning in tributary streams.

Largemouth bass

Fishing improves throughout the spring as waters warm and fish move onshore, peaking during the spawn. Summer is a slight lull though dawn/dusk hours can be very good. Catch improves in Fall as waters cool, vegetation begins to die back, and prey becomes more available. Winter is the hardest time because fish are offshore and slow moving.

Island Lake fishing pier damaged in fire

The Kitsap County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of an early morning fire Thursday that damaged the wooden fishing pier on the north shore of Island Lake.

Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue firefighters were called at 5:27 a.m. to the county park between Silverdale and Poulsbo when a person walking their dog called 911 after seeing the flames. Firefighters launched a boat to douse the blaze from multiple angles, according to a statement from the fire department.

Alex Wisniewski, director of Kitsap County Parks Department, said the fire burned the far end of the pier but about 20 feet of the pier closest to shore was unharmed.

“The tentative plan right now is not outright removal, but to rebuild,” Wisniewski said, cautioning that an assessment of the damage could change the repair plan, but his intent is to keep the pier at the lake for anglers.

“A lot of people fish at the lake and I don't want to remove a resource because of one bad incident,” he said.

Those with information on the fire can contact the county fire marshal at 360-337-5777.
